The Shellfish Staff is a Hardmode summon weapon that is dropped by the Giant Clam. When used, it summons a Shellfish that follows the player and attacks nearby enemies by attaching itself to them. Each Shellfish takes up 2 minion slots. Shellfish only deal direct damage when initially latching onto an enemy. When latched, it inflicts the Shellfish Claps debuff.
Its best modifier is Ruthless. The Mythical modifier provides the widest array of stat bonuses, but these primarily affect the initial summon rather than the resulting minion. Additionally, minions cannot deal critical hits. The only lasting advantage a Mythical Shellfish Staff has over a Ruthless one is knockback.
Notes
- The shellfish minions are also summoned by the Mollusk armor, which have a base damage of 140 instead of 70.
- This weapon can also be obtained from Prism Crates in Hardmode after the Giant Clam has been defeated.
- Both the direct hit and the debuff are affected by the summon damage penalty.
- All enemies with 99% or higher damage reduction are immune to the Shellfish Claps debuff.
Tips
- Due to its high base damage, this weapon synergizes well with Luxor's Gift, because the projectile it fires will deal considerably higher damage than it would from other summoner weapons that are attainable at the same time as the Shellfish Staff.
- This weapon can cheese The Destroyer very efficiently if attached to his head. Doing so will also not cause any Probes to spawn, as the minion's damage effect is a debuff. However, keep in mind that the fight must begin almost immediately once the night starts, as this procedure can take a lot of time and if the fight is not started quickly enough, The Destroyer could despawn or enrage at dawn.
