Void Essence

The Nadir is a craftable post-Moon Lord spear. When used, it attacks like a normal spear and fires void essences that deal 25% of the weapon's damage, travel through blocks, and home in on enemies. Upon getting near enemies or after traveling a moderate distance, void essences erupt into void tentacles that extend in random directions. Upon contact with an enemy, void essences rapidly slow down, deal several hits, then dissipate. The spear and both of its projectiles ignore NPC immunity frames.

Its best modifier is Godly or Demonic. Both modifiers increase the average damage output by the same amount. However, Ruthless might be preferred if the player already has very high critical strike chance.

  • The void essences do not home in on enemies behind blocks, despite being able to travel through them.

Trivia

  • A nadir is the lowest point of something; the opposite of a zenith.
    • This draws a parallel with the Zenith (despite the Nadir existing long before Terraria 1.4's release), as Zenith is the vanilla game's ultimate sword, while Nadir is Calamity's strongest spear.
  • The item's tooltip references part of a quote by Friedrich Nietzsche: "Whoever fights with monsters should see to it that he does not become a monster in the process. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you."
  • The void essences are based on Humanity Phantoms from Dark Souls, an enemy commonly found in an area of its DLC Artorias of the Abyss called Chasm of the Abyss.

  • 2.0.4.001:
    • Increased sell price from 30 Gold Coin to 48 Gold Coin.
    • Fixed it having strange visual offsets when thrusted.
  • 2.0.3.007: Fixed it lingering for extra animation cycles when switching to another spear while in use.
  • 2.0.3.003:
    • Nerfed damage from 390 to 365, but void tentacles now grant 4 effective local immunity frames instead of 10.
    • Now uses the Rarity Level: 15 rarity instead of Rarity Level: 14.
  • 2.0.3.001:
    • Buffed damage from 280 to 390, increased projectile speed by 66.6% and void projectile duration by 200%. Changed how the void projectiles fade.
    • Now uses 5 Auric Bars in its recipe instead of 8 Cosmilite Bars.
  • 2.0.0.001: Void tentacles now grant 10 effective local immunity frames instead of 1.
  • 1.5.0.001:
    • Nerfed damage from 700 to 280.
    • Now uses 8 Cosmilite Bars and 8 Darksun Fragments in its recipe instead of 10 Cosmilite Bars, 15 Darksun Fragments, and 3 Ascendant Spirit Essences.
    • Now requires a Cosmic Anvil to craft instead of a Draedon's Forge.
  • 1.4.5.002: Now uses 3 Ascendant Spirit Essences in its recipe instead of 15 Phantoplasm.
  • 1.4.5.001:
    • Nerfed damage from 800 to 700, and the spear now grants 4 local immunity frames instead of 2.
    • Void Essences now deal 25% base damage instead of a flat 160 damage.
  • 1.4.2.107: Projectiles are now briefly invisible upon spawning.
  • 1.4.2.105: Decreased sell price from 50 Gold Coin to 36 Gold Coin.
