The Galileo Gladius in use. Note how the pull is interrupted by attacking midway or colliding with tiles.

The Galileo Gladius is a craftable post-Moon Lord shortsword. When used, the weapon rapidly stabs in front of the player with slightly varying angles, like the Gladius. Glowing blue energy extends a short distance from the weapon's tip with every stab, improving its range. Attacking enemies this way accumulates 1 Starburst per hit, a unique resource with a cap of 100; the player's current Starburst amount is tracked on the Cooldown Rack.

If the player has at least 10 Starbursts, the blade can be thrown with Open / ActivateRight Click (PC default): Activate environment object or talk to NPC; the thrown blade is connected to the player via a constellation chain. The blade gets impaled into enemies on impact and inflicts the Voidfrost debuff for 10 seconds, and the constellation chain remains connected. While the blade is impaled in an enemy, the player can free the blade in two ways:

  • Pressing Use / AttackLeft Click (PC default): Use held item or attack will consume 10 Starbursts to yank the blade out of the enemy, dealing 10× base damage. This also launches three lingering Vega Star projectiles in a slight spread in the direction the blade was impaled from, which damage enemies.
  • Pressing Open / ActivateRight Click (PC default): Activate environment object or talk to NPC will consume 20 Starbursts to pull the player quickly towards the enemy, and cause the player to bounce off of the enemy on contact. Bouncing off the enemy will deal 20× base damage, and launch the player in the opposite direction. This also launches three Vega Stars towards the cursor, in a farther and wider spread.
    • In the brief moment after the player makes contact with the enemy but before they bounce, the player will be latched onto the enemy. While latched, the player can aim the cursor to alter the direction they will be launched away, indicated by a line behind the player. The latch time will be slightly extended if Open / ActivateRight Click (PC default): Activate environment object or talk to NPC is held down, giving the player more time to aim. The player is granted invincibility frames during the pull and the latch, to prevent the player from receiving contact damage from the latched enemy.
    • The bounce can be interrupted before it occurs, either by attacking at any point during the pull or latch, or because tiles are in the way between the player and the enemy. If this happens, the player will be reeled in as close as possible towards the enemy and they will not bounce off of them, consuming 10 Starbursts and launching Vega Stars in the direction the blade was impaled from. If the player is blocked by tiles during the pull, they will bounce a short distance off of the tiles instead, with no latch.
    • If the player has less than 20 Starbursts when Open / ActivateRight Click (PC default): Activate environment object or talk to NPC is pressed, 10 Starbursts will be consumed and the blade will be yanked as if Use / AttackLeft Click (PC default): Use held item or attack had been pressed.

The thrown blade passes through tiles. If the thrown blade does not impact an enemy, it will quickly be reeled back into the player, consuming no Starbursts.

Vega Stars have 5 pierce, last for 5 seconds before disappearing, and disappear upon impact with tiles.

Its best modifier is Legendary.

Notes

  • Starbursts are a resource shared by all "Stratus" weapons. Starbursts disappear after the player has not held a Stratus weapon for 10 seconds.
  • For each Starburst the player has, a small star will visually hover around the player, which can be one of several light colors. Collecting 10 Starbursts will cause the stars to converge into one larger star. For example, at 63 Starbursts, the player will be surrounded by six large stars and three small stars.
  • Starbursts are accumulated for each enemy hit with a stab. However, hitting multiple enemies will only generate 0.25 Starburst for hits past the first.
  • The impaled blade will remain stuck inside enemies even if the player switches to another item. Pressing Use / AttackLeft Click (PC default): Use held item or attack or Open / ActivateRight Click (PC default): Activate environment object or talk to NPC while holding any other item will not cause a yank nor pull to occur. The blade will remain impaled until the player switches back to the Galileo Gladius item to perform a yank or pull.
    • If the player does this, and waits for 10 seconds for their Starbursts to disappear while the blade is still impaled, the player will not be able to perform a pull; pressing Open / ActivateRight Click (PC default): Activate environment object or talk to NPC will do nothing at all. Pressing Use / AttackLeft Click (PC default): Use held item or attack will simply release the blade from the enemy, dealing only the weapon's base damage and releasing no Vega Stars.
  • There is no maximum distance to the constellation chain connecting the player to the impaled blade. Performing a pull on an impaled enemy a far distance away will reel the player in the entire distance at a fixed speed until they make contact (assuming no tiles are in the way), and they will be invincible for the entire duration.
    • Likewise, there is no maximum amount of time the blade can remain impaled. It will remain impaled indefinitely until the player yanks or pulls.
    • However, the blade will be reeled back to the player if the impaled enemy despawns, which is likely to happen at far enough distances.
  • The blue energy extending the weapon's stab hitbox will still count as a true melee hit for items such as the Hide of Astrum Deus.

Trivia

  • Galileo was known as the "Father of observational astronomy" due to his massive contributions to the field, fitting for this weapon's stellar theme.
  • Gladius is the Latin word for "Sword". Latin was a widely used language in scholarly fields during the era Galileo was alive.
  • The "Vega Star" projectiles are a reference to Vega, the brightest star in the constellation of Lyra and one of the brightest stars in the night sky as a whole.
  • The last line in the tooltip is a reference to the song Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, which in turn is a reference to the opera The Barber of Seville.
  • The pull-latch attack was inspired by the "Bash" ability from Ori and the Blind Forest as well as Byleth's "Up Special" from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
  • Galileo Gladius shares code with the special swords, but its base functionality is still that of a shortsword.

History

These history sections are still a work-in-progress, and may not yet contain changes relevant to the current version of the Calamity Mod.
  • 2.2.2: Now uses 4 Ruinous Souls and 20 Exodium Clusters in its recipe instead of 5 and 15.
  • 2.2.0:
    • Hitting multiple enemies with a stab will only generate 0.25 Starburst for hits past the first.
    • Fixed it not dealing true melee damage.
  • 2.1.2: Sword rip now deals 10x base damage instead of 15x, and sword pull now deals 20x base damage instead of 30x.
  • 2.1.1: Sword rip now deals 15x base damage instead of 17.5x, and sword pull now deals 30x base damage instead of 35x.
  • 2.1.0:
    • Reworked:
      • Buffed damage from 92 to 600, use time from 12 to 8, and projectile velocity from 0.9 to 10.
      • No longer fires homing crescent projectiles or rains planets on true melee hits.
      • Now rapidly stabs in front of the player with an enlarged slash hitbox. Hitting enemies generates Starburst. Starburst is an energy pool used by Stratus weapons with a cap of 100; Starburst drains while not holding a Stratus weapon.
      • Right-clicking throws the sword attached to a constellation chain, sticking into enemies on hit. Left-clicking with the sword stuck in an enemy rips it out, dealing 17.5x base damage and consuming 10 Starburst. Right-clicking with the sword stuck in an enemy pulls the player to the enemy, dealing 35x base damage and consuming 20 Starburst while also giving immunity frames.
    • Now requires a Hardmode Anvil to craft instead of an Ancient Manipulator.
  • 2.0.4.001:
    • Projectiles now home towards the closest enemy instead of the earliest enemy in the NPC array.
