This article is about the post-Moon Lord boss. For the fishing rod with a similar name, see The Devourer of Cods.

You are no god... but I shall feast upon your essence regardless!

— The Devourer of Gods

The Devourer of Gods is a post-Moon Lord boss that is intended to be fought after all of the Sentinels of the Devourer have been defeated. The fight against this boss is lengthy and difficult, with several phases and numerous varying attacks and behaviors.

Defeating it will provide the player with Cosmilite Bars, a necessary crafting material used to craft a variety of late-game equipment. The Pumpkin Moon, Frost Moon and Solar Eclipse events will significantly increase in difficulty as well, allowing enemies to drop Nightmare Fuel, Endothermic Energy and Darksun Fragments respectively, which are also essential late-game crafting materials.

Spawn

The Devourer of Gods does not spawn on its own, and requires the player to summon it with the Cosmic Worm. It can be fought anywhere and at any time.

When summoned, it will make a loud cosmic screech instead of the regular boss roar.

Behavior

The Devourer of Gods at its core is a worm enemy, featuring a head trailed by body segments and ending with a tail, flying through the air and digging through blocks. The Devourer of Gods' body segments sport very high Damage Reduction (DR), however its head and tail segments do not and will even take increased damage, rendering them the primary targets for dealing damage. The Devourer of Gods has 82 segments in total during phase 1, and 102 segments in total during phase 2.

When initially spawned, the sky will turn blue and the boss will fly and circle in the air over the player like a Crawltipede. It will not attempt to physically attack unless the player is a noticeable distance off the ground. The Devourer of Gods can move through air as if it were solid blocks in this mode, and the Warped debuff is inflicted on all players, which multiplies their Y velocity by 1.01 every frame, in turn making them slightly floatier. This effect is identical to the Caribbean Rum.

After fifteen seconds (initially), the sky turns purple and The Devourer of Gods descends to the ground, now continuously charging at the player regardless of their distance above the ground. It cannot fly in this state when on-screen, but it gains extremely high acceleration and top speed, and will rapidly accelerate to turn around if it strays too far from the target. Replacing Warped, the Extreme Gravity debuff is inflicted on all players, disabling infinite flight and reducing flight time by 25%. This mode also lasts for fifteen seconds, after which The Devourer of Gods turns passive to grounded players and resumes flying, the sky turns blue, and Warped replaces Extreme Gravity.

These modes primarily function on a timer, periodically alternating between the two behaviors. As the Devourer of Gods' health decreases, it spends less and less time in its passive (blue) phase, eventually only switching to it for less than a second. If the player is far away from The Devourer of Gods, it will quickly switch to its aggressive (purple) phase in order to accelerate to them, regardless of the timer.

Attacks

  • Charges the player if they are airborne while passive (blue). Always charges, and is affected by gravity, while aggressive (purple).
  • All segments inflict the God Slayer Inferno and Whispering Death debuffs upon contact.
  • The Devourer of Gods' movement speed increases upon reaching 92%, 84%, 76%, and 68% health.
  • Every few seconds, fires a simultaneous barrage of aimed death lasers from its segments, telegraphed by lines.
  • Upon reaching 90% health, on intervals, fires an additional barrage of death lasers from the sides of the player, telegraphed by lines, in patterns shaped like an X.
    • These patterns follow a set order of from the right, from the left, from the right and left, and from all 4 cardinal directions.
    • One laser will always be aimed directly at the player.
    • Lasers travel further and faster as The Devourer of Gods loses health.
  • Upon reaching ~80% health, the Devourer of Gods can turn partially invisible and fire two quick laser barrages from off screen, in a similar pattern to its usual barrages but significantly more dense.
    • The Devourer of Gods cannot deal contact damage while invisible, but can still be damaged.
  • Upon reaching 75% health, the sky will turn pitch black, making it difficult to tell which movement method The Devourer of Gods is currently following.
  • At 60% health, it will become intangible and fly into a portal, starting the transition to its final phase.

Attacks

  • Continues previous movement patterns, charging the player if they are airborne while passive (blue), and is gravity-affected but always charging while aggressive (purple).
    • Becomes increasingly aggressive during its passive (blue) phase as it loses health, gaining the ability to charge at the player even if they're on the ground.
  • Retains its periodic laser barrages, although it loses the ability to spawn lasers from around the target.
  • The Devourer of Gods periodically fires Essence Fireball.gifGod Slayer Fireballs from its mouth which inflict God Slayer Inferno. They are shot around the player or ahead of them if they are moving.
    • The fire rate increases drastically upon the boss reaching 10% health.
  • 12 seconds after reaching 50% health, The Devourer of Gods will turn partially invisible and fire two quick horizontally and vertically moving laser walls from off screen, with gaps between them for the player to remain in. Occasionally the laser patterns from Phase 1 will also be included with the laser walls, either the horizontal or vertical lasers not appearing in these patterns. The lasers are telegraphed by lines which appear in front of where the lasers will be shot. This will occur every 12 seconds.
    • One laser will always be aimed at the player.
    • The same laser wall pattern will never appear twice in a row.
    • During laser wall phases, the player has infinite flight time.
  • Upon reaching 20% health, The Devourer of Gods will force a laser wall attack, regardless of the laser wall timer. It then creates a portal near the player, and after a few seconds, the boss will teleport to the portal in a large burst of particles and charge at the player, additionally summoning 3 Cosmic Guardians. The boss now gains a speed boost and stops shooting laser walls.
    • The Cosmic Guardians cannot hurt the player, nor can the player hurt them, for around 3 seconds after spawning to prevent cheap hits.
  • Upon reaching 9% health, the sky turns pitch black once again.

In Expert Mode

  • The Devourer of Gods' segments are larger.
  • During the first phase, speed increases even further upon reaching 10% health.
  • Projectiles are fired at much higher rates.

In Revengeance Mode

  • During the first phase, summons one Cosmic Guardian at 90% health and two at 75% health.
  • During the final phase:
    • Immediately following a wall of lasers phase, or if the player strays too far away from the Devourer of Gods, the boss will create a portal near the player before teleporting there and charging at them, with the charge predicting their movement.
      • The portal will create a large explosion of God Slayer Fireballs when the Devourer charges when below 36% health.
      • The portal will disappear if a laser wall phase is about to occur.
    • The laser walls have a different pattern.

In Death Mode

  • The sky no longer changes colors to indicate the phases and stays pitch black for the entire fight.
  • The Devourer of Gods always moves at maximum speed, regardless of health.
  • During the final phase:
    • The Devourer of Gods shoots Fireballs at a higher rate.
    • The Devourer of Gods changes more often between the passive and aggressive phases.

On the For the worthy seed

  • Size increased by 50%.
  • Moves and turns 10% faster.
  • Warped debuff's acceleration multiplier is increased from 1.01 to 1.02.

Resistances

  • The Devourer of Gods takes 115% damage from the Time Bolt's stealth strike.

Aftermath

Notes

  • The boss always begins in its airborne passive mode when it spawns.
  • While the Devourer of Gods is alive, the player's horizontal movement speed is reduced, making it harder to outrun the boss.
  • All damage inflicted on the head is multiplied by 1.10, while all damage inflicted on the tail is multiplied by 1.25.
  • The head and tail segments take decreased damage the further the player is from them, up to a maximum of 25% reduced damage.
  • During the final phase, all of The Devourer of Gods' segments appear on the map.
  • The Devourer of Gods' body segments in both phases and the tail in the final phase are invulnerable for 6 seconds upon spawning. Additionally, the tail in the first is invulnerable for 12 seconds upon spawning.
  • Enraging the Devourer of Gods with Demonshade armor will instantly trigger laser walls for the debuff's duration. The Devourer of Gods will remain visible for the debuff's duration if it was visible when enraged. Similarly, it will remain invisible for the debuff's duration if it was invisible when enraged.
  • All of the Devourer of Gods' loot will spawn at the nearest segment with the exception of the Cosmilite Bricks and Hearts which will always spawn at the head.
  • While not visible, Boss Zen is still applied to players during transition from Phase 1 to Phase 2.
  • When playing in a multiplayer world, upon reaching its second phase, the Devourer of Gods will appear near the player closest to the world spawn. This can pose an issue if one is not prepared, as arenas will often be made far away from spawn, and Town NPCs kept close to it.
  • When the boss transitions between the first phase and the following one all segments except for the head and tail lose their contact damage.

Tips

For more elaborate strategies on defeating The Devourer of Gods, including weapon and arena recommendations, see Guide:The Devourer of Gods strategies.

  • By building a very long platform at least half the screen's height off the ground and using the high-speed sprint of the Seraph Tracers, The Devourer of Gods can be lured and trapped under the platform if the player temporarily drops below it while the boss is in its aggressive ground-based mode.
  • The Devourer of Gods' body has very high damage reduction. Because of this, the head and tail should be prioritized and aimed for as much as possible.
  • In Revengeance Mode, save up the Rage for the first Cosmic Guardian and the Adrenaline for the last two. This will make dealing with them much easier. Keep in mind that Adrenaline is set to 0 when you are hit, so be careful while holding it.
  • While The Devourer of Gods uses its laser wall spam attack during the final phase, its segments are unable to deal damage until they fully materialize back.
  • This battle can cause severe FPS drops throughout the fight on low-end devices, especially in Death Mode, thus it would be wise to not spam a lot of projectiles to reduce the lag as much as possible. This is especially the case with weapons that emit many particles or shoot many projectiles.
    • This can, however, give the player more time to react to the boss’ attacks. This is especially valuable when the boss spams the lasers in its second phase, where the player will have more time to react and avoid the lasers.
  • Avoid flying up in the air for too long if possible. Because the player has increased vertical movement, they will be susceptible for longer to the Devourer’s attacks.
  • The Devourer of Gods decreases player's horizontal speed over time, making it very difficult to outrun the boss with speed accessories like Angel Treads and Seraph Tracers.
    • Dash accessories can be used to increase horizontal speed and counter the speed decrease for a short amount of time, providing a powerful combo when paired with the aforementioned speed accessories.
  • The Devourer of Gods could be fought before any other post-Moon Lord boss is defeated, though it is highly recommended that the player defeats Polterghast, and optionally The Old Duke, before attempting the fight, as the Devourer's very fast speed, high damage, and complex attack pattern makes the fight extremely difficult.
  • During phase transition the tail segment doesn't lose its contact damage and thus should still be avoided.

Trivia

  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for The Devourer of Gods: "Its otherworldly ego is known as well as its overwhelming power across the land, as in battle it boasts constantly. Admittedly it is one of the few able to back up its claims."
  • The Devourer of Gods' first phase theme is Scourge of The Universe, which was composed by the artist DM DOKURO.
    • If the Calamity Music add-on mod is disabled, Boss 3 will play instead.
    • Prior to the release of Scourge of The Universe, The Devourer of Gods' theme was a remix of "Last Battle" from the game Cave Story, known as Last Battle (Ballos Mix), also made by DM DOKURO.
  • Before The Devourer of Gods' final phase spawns, its theme changes to UNIVERSAL COLLAPSE, which was also composed by DM DOKURO.
    • If the Calamity Music add-on mod is disabled, the Moon Lord's theme will play instead.
  • The Devourer of Gods' has a Draedon's Log entry dedicated to it (more specifically its armor) that can be found in the Space Bio-center Lab.
  • The Devourer of Gods' second phase boasts 102 individual segments, making it one of the two longest bosses in the mod, the other being Thanatos.
  • Unlike other worm bosses, The Devourer of Gods has map icons for both its head and tail during its first phase and has directionally-accurate map icons for every single segment during its final phase.
  • In Death Mode, if The Devourer of Gods' head kills the player, a special death message will appear stating "<PlayerName>'s essence was consumed by the devourer."
    • In previous version of the mod, the head would instantly kill the player and trigger the same death message.
  • The Devourer of Gods' name is often shortened to "DoG" within the community, and is even referred to as such in the tooltips for the Lacerator and the Alicorn buff. This often leads to jokes comparing the boss to a dog, or giving it nicknames such as "Doggo".
  • According to the lore, The Devourer of Gods is the same species as the Storm Weaver, meaning that it likely has the same type of flesh underneath its armor.
  • The Devourer of Gods' name is a reference to Aldrich, Devourer of Gods from Dark Souls III.
  • The Devourer of Gods' quote "Don't get cocky, kid!" is a reference to a line spoken by Senator Armstrong in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.
    • This line was, in turn, a reference to a line spoken by Han Solo in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.
    • This quote is the same quote when the Cosmic Plushie stabs the player, even when The Devourer of Gods is not being fought.
  • The Devourer of Gods' quote "Nothing personal, kid." is likely a reference to the "*Teleports Behind You* Nothing Personal, Kid" meme.
  • The Devourer of Gods' laser wall attack was inspired by a similar attack used by The Radiance from the game Hollow Knight.
  • All of The Devourer of Gods' quotes are internally named "EdgyBossText".
  • The Devourer of Gods is one of the two bosses that drop a Death Mode exclusive item, the other being Supreme Calamitas.
  • The Devourer of Gods can be summoned sometime after the Moon Lord is defeated, as its summoning item can be crafted without needing to defeat the Sentinels of the Devourer.
  • Several Devourer of Gods features were present in previous versions of the mod that have since been removed or changed:
    • Using the Rod of Discord at any point during the fight would result in the player's life draining quickly. Now, the player will not get penalized.
    • The Devourer of Gods used to drop the Murasama at a guaranteed rate in Revengeance Mode, however it is now found in The Underworld Arsenal Lab.
    • The Devourer's first phase has had 7 resprites over the mod's lifetime, and its final phase has had 3.
      • This means it has had the most resprites of anything in the entire mod.
      • One of The Devourer of Gods' old sprites had similar looks to that of an old sprite of the Armored Digger.
    • The Devourer of Gods' final form's boss health bar intentionally started at 600% instead of 100%, alluding to its increased armor and health.
    • The Devourer of Gods used to spawn Stasis Probes and tiny worms known as Devourer Spawn when hurt, similar to The Destroyer's spawning Probes.
    • Getting hit by The Devourer of Gods' head in Death Mode used to result into an instant death for the player.
    • The Devourer of Gods was unable to take any damage that would deal half of its health, such as butcher or an incredibly powerful weapon from another mod.
      • When this happened, the quote "You think...you can butcher...ME!?" would appear. This quote was a reference to a line spoken by the Master in Fallout 1.
    • The Devourer of Gods used to summon weakened versions of the Sentinels of the Devourer after defeating its first phase. They would no longer be summoned after defeating them all once during the fight.
      • If the player had yet to defeat them before, they would instead be summoned at their full power.
  • The Devourer of Gods was one of the first bosses added to the Calamity Mod, along with the Desert Scourge and The Slime God.
  • If the Boss Checklist Mod is installed, his unique despawn message will be "The Devourer of Gods has slain everyone and feasted on their essence."

Quotes

  • "You are no god... but I shall feast upon your essence regardless!" (When The Devourer of Gods is spawned)
  • "Delicious..." (When the player gets hit by its head)
  • "Did that hurt?" (When the player gets hit by its head)
  • "A fatal mistake!" (When the player gets hit by its head)
  • "Don't get cocky!" (When The Devourer of Gods drops to 66% life)
  • "It's not over yet!" (When The Devourer of Gods appears in its Final Phase)
  • "A GOD DOES NOT FEAR DEATH!" (When The Devourer of Gods drops to 14% life in its Final Phase)
