Behavior
Plantera's enrage mechanic receives changes in all modes; she will no longer enrage outside of the Underground Jungle but will enrage at the Surface.
Plantera will receive a boost to her speed depending on the size of the arena she is fought in, which is determined by the amount of active tiles in an area around her. If the arena is smaller she will move slower, and if the arena is larger she will move faster, proportional to the lack of blocks. The amount of tentacles spawned is also affected by these boosts.
In Revengeance Mode
Similarly to Expert Mode, Plantera moves through blocks slowly, using long vines to grapple foreground blocks (and background walls in her second phase), similar to multi-hooks. However, the behaviors of Plantera, her tentacles, and most of her projectiles are significantly different.
General
- (Poison) Seeds no longer home in on the player.
- Plantera's hooks deal no contact damage.
- Plantera no longer gains damage or defense while enraged. Instead, she regenerates 1,259 health every 0.5 seconds.
Phase 1
Plantera's first phase follows a 20-second cycle that alternates between firing seeds and spores.
- During the first 14 seconds, she fires (Poison) Seeds, with their fire rate drastically ramping up over the last 5 seconds. The fire rate of these seeds also gradually increases as Plantera's health decreases.
- During the last 6 seconds, she fires 2 Homing Gas Bulbs that home in on the player and travel through blocks for 2.5 seconds; after this time, they move in a straight line and dissipate on contact with blocks. The bulbs also leave behind small clouds of Homing Gas Bulb Spore Gas that travel very slowly in the direction the bulb was moving and last for 15 seconds. The spore gas only starts dealing contact damage 2 seconds after it spawns.
- Below 85% health, while rapidly firing seeds, Plantera also fires 4 Thorn Balls that travel in an arc and stick to the first block or platform they contact. 10 seconds after sticking to a surface, they explode into Spikes that travel in the cardinal and intercardinal directions, and dissipate on contact with blocks.
- Below 75% health, Plantera fires 3 bulbs per cycle instead of 2. Additionally, after she finishes firing seeds, she releases an uneven ring of 30 Spore Gases which slowly float outward and last for 15 seconds. The gases only start dealing contact damage 2 seconds after they spawn.
Phase 2
- Immediately upon entering phase 2, Plantera spawns 8 Plantera's Tentacles.
- The range at which Plantera's Tentacles hang away from Plantera increases as their health decreases, starting at ~7 blocks away at 100% health and increasing up to ~42 blocks away at 1% health.
- When the tentacles reach 0% health, instead of dying, they fully heal themselves, detach themselves from Plantera, and start quickly flying towards the player. The detached tentacles move much faster horizontally than vertically, push themselves away from each other, and are immune to movement-impairing status effects, but not knockback.
- Plantera switches from firing a constant stream of seeds at the player to firing spreads of 5 seeds once every two seconds.
- At 47% health, and for every 4% health lost below that point, Plantera spawns a floating spore that drifts toward the player. The spore continuously floats downward and through blocks, and cannot be damaged or destroyed.
- 20 seconds after entering phase 2, all of Plantera's Tentacles automatically detach themselves and Plantera starts firing seed spreads once every 1.5 seconds instead of 2. Additionally, for every 10 seed spreads fired after this point, she starts emitting green light and loosely moving towards the player before dashing at them and releasing an uneven ring of 12 Spore Gases. After dashing, she regrows 2 Plantera's Tentacles unless there are at least 4 alive or at least 2 are still attached to her.
- Below 35% health, Plantera dashes after firing 7 seed spreads instead of 10, and also releases 8 Spore Gases while dashing that either float in the same or opposite direction Plantera charged.
- Below 28% health, Plantera fires 7 seeds per spread instead of 5.
- Below 20% health, Plantera dashes after every 5 seed spreads instead of 7, and her dashes are faster.
In Death Mode
Phase 1
- Fire rate of seeds is increased.
- Fires 3 bulbs per cycle when above 75% health, and 4 bulbs when below 75% health.
- Thorn balls explode after 9 seconds instead of 10.
Phase 2
- Spawns 10 tentacles at the start of the phase instead of 8.
- Spawns up to 4 tentacles after charging instead of 2, and the spawn cap for tentacles is increased from 4 to 8 for all tentacles, and from 2 to 4 for attached tentacles.
- Detached tentacles move faster.
During the Boss Rush
Aftermath
- Perennial Ore is generated in the Cavern layer of the world.
- If the Calamitas Clone has not already been defeated, Reapers, Vampires and Psychos will begin dropping Solar Veils.
- The Great Sand Shark will begin spawning after killing 10 Sand Sharks.
- Jungle Crates will begin dropping Chlorophyte and Perennial Bars.
- Mantis Shrimp will begin dropping Mantis Claws.
- Dungeon Crates and Eidolists will begin dropping Ectoplasm.
- The Bandit will begin selling Glove of Precision, Glove of Recklessness, and Monkey Darts.
- The Drunk Princess will begin selling Evergreen Gin, Caribbean Rum, Margarita, Old Fashioned, and Prismatic Lacewing.
- The Arms Dealer will begin selling the Uzi.
Terrain Preparation
- Due to Plantera's enrage, it is highly recommended to construct its arena in the Cavern layer, while in the Jungle biome.
- The player should strive to make a decently sized arena to allow more room to avoid Plantera's petal shots and spores, while not enraging it specially on Revengeance Mode or higher difficulties.
Gearing Up
Armor
- Chlorophyte and Hallowed armor are great balanced choices for melee, ranger and mage players.
- Daedalus armor is another balanced pick for all classes.
- Summoners may utilize Spider armor for bonus damage.
- Fathom Swarmer armor can be used alternatively if Calamitas Clone was defeated first.
- Rogue players can use Titan Heart armor due to its great set bonuses and stats.
- Umbraphile armor can be used alternatively if Calamitas Clone was defeated first.
- Summoners may utilize Spider armor for bonus damage.
Accessories
- Rangers can utilize the Magic Quiver if they are using bows.
- Mages may find Permafrost's Concoction useful due to the multitude of bonuses it gives as well as its revive ability.
- Using the respective class Emblems can be useful.
- Rogue players can use the Vampiric Talisman as an alternative if Calamitas Clone has been defeated, due to its lifesteal effect on critical hits.
- Mages can use the Celestial Emblem with its boost to mana star pickup range.
- Rogue players can benefit from the Electrician's Glove due to its many effects.
Weapons & Equipment
Melee
- The Pwnagehammer is a powerful option for Plantera herself, but it lacks when it comes to going through her tentacles.
- The Biome Blade has multiple attunements that can aid against Plantera, including Heaven's Might for mid-range fighting and Grovetender's Touch or Pure Clarity for long-range fighting. Arid Grandeur is higher-risk, close-range option with very high damage.
- If Calamitas Clone has already been defeated, the Ark of the Ancients is a very powerful weapon against Plantera due to its homing capabilities.
Ranged
- The Darkecho Greatbow's ricocheting crystal darts and overall high damage put it at a great spot at dealing with Plantera and her tentacles.
- The Corroded Caustibow can be utilized to make quick work of the tentacles with its debuffs and trail.
- The Brimstone Fury is another good option for dealing good damage to Plantera.
- The Arbalest can build up to very high speeds, and if underground works well with Chlorophyte Arrows.
- The Megalodon is one of the strongest guns at this stage.
Magic
- Both Valkyrie Ray and Arctic Bear Paw are powerful options due to their piercing capabilities that can greatly help with Plantera's tentacles.
- The Ion Blaster is another great option if used at its highest potential.
- The Undine's Retribution can pierce through walls and targets automatically, doing high damage.
Summoner
- The Deepsea Staff, Dormant Brimseeker, Optic Staff, Entropy's Vigil (if Calamitas Clone was defeated first), and Mounted Scanner are great picks that can go through the tentacles and attack Plantera all together.
- Summoners might also find Cryogenic Staff, Orthocera Shell, Ballista Cane, Dreadmine Staff (if Calamitas Clone was defeated prior), Tundra Flame Blossoms Staff and Vengeful Sun Staff great for bonus damage.
Rogue
- The Scourge of the Seas is an excellent choice due to its lingering clouds that can deal great damage to Plantera and her tentacles.
- The Kelvin Catalyst can be of use due to its piercing capabilities to attack both Plantera and her tentacles.
- The Totality Breakers are another excellent crowd control weapon for damaging both Plantera and her tentacles, if Calamitas Clone was defeated first.
- The Skyfin Bombers are another excellent option for dealing with Plantera and her tentacles, specially on stealth builds and its homing.
- The Spent Fuel Container is another excellent crowd control weapon for Plantera and her tentacles.
- The Frequency Manipulator does high damage against Plantera herself, although it has trouble clearing out the tentacles at the start of Phase 2.
Tips
- Unlike Normal/Expert Plantera, the circle method is less effective here due to Planetera's lingering spore clouds, and her 3 petal shots in phase 2.
- Try to change your direction or path to avoid the petals, spike balls and spore clouds.
- When in smaller arenas or with weaker movement options, especially in Phase 2, it can be very helpful to take out the tentacles first. Piercing weapons work best for this, after which it is best switch back to a higher damage, single target weapon.
Notes
- Although Plantera is intended to be fought after the three Mechanical bosses, Plantera Bulbs start spawning as soon as Hardmode is enabled. This means that it is possible to fight Plantera before the Mechanical bosses, although it would be very difficult to do so.
- Plantera checks for arena size by constantly scanning a 40x40 rectangular area around herself (1600 blocks total). If there are less than 800 active tiles in that area, she will move faster proportional to the lack of blocks.
