Deerclops is a Pre-Hardmode boss that is encountered in the Snow biome. Fighting Deerclops is not required for game progression, but defeating it rewards the player with coins and other useful items.

Spawn

Deerclops can be summoned manually by using a Deer Thing at any time in the Snow biome.

Deerclops can also spawn naturally at 12:00 AM during a Blizzard on the surface Snow biome after fulfilling these conditions:

  • At least one player in the world has at least 9 defense or at least 200 health.
  • There is a player at the surface Snow biome.
    • There must be no town NPCs within a 240×135-tile rectangle centered on that player.
  • There must be no other bosses or hostile events (except the Blood Moon) active.
  • If in Don't dig up or Get fixed boi worlds, Deerclops will only naturally spawn in Snow biomes on the Surface layer, where the Blizzard visual effect is not displayed.
    • Deerclops will not spawn at the Cavern layer where the Blizzard effect is displayed.

Deerclops can still spawn naturally even if Journey Mode's enemy spawn rate slider is set to 0×.

If Deerclops has previously been defeated in the world, there is only a 1/4 (25%) chance for it to spawn naturally.

Behavior

Deerclops gains a shadow border to signify its enrage distance in Revengeance and Death Mode.

In Revengeance Mode

  • Its ice spike attack covers a larger distance when below 50% health.
  • Deerclops will occasionally roar and spawn between 5-16 shadow hands around the player depending on its health.
    • Shadow hand rotation is randomized, and their velocity scales as its health lowers.
  • If Deerclops is not close enough to the player to perform its ice spike attack, it will spawn 20 debris on the ground which are all spaced out evenly. The debris will then launch into the air one by one, with each one gaining increased velocity one after the other before falling through the ground afterwards.
    • The debris starts out translucent before they can deal damage and they launch up much faster as its health lowers.
  • If the player stays above Deerclops for some time, it will roar and spawn between 3-10 shadow hands which scales as its health lowers and they are spawned slightly further away from the player's current position.
  • If the player moves a certain distance away from the boss, its shadowy aura becomes more opaque and it will take less damage the further away the player is from the boss, eventually becoming fully opaque and taking almost no damage.
  • Despawns if all players in the world are dead.

In Death Mode

  • Moves faster as its health lowers.
  • Ice spikes last longer.
  • Passively spawns shadow hands at a faster rate and they move faster.
  • Spawns more debris in a denser spread and they launch up faster and at a faster rate.

In Revengeance Master Mode

  • Spawns even more debris in an even denser spread and they launch up even faster.
  • Ice spikes last much longer.
  • Spawns more shadow hands while directly above it and in the shadow hand circle attack, which travel at a faster velocity.

In Death Master Mode

  • Spawns even more debris.

  • 2.0.4.003: Fixed ice spikes not dealing damage in Revengeance Mode.

      • Rubble now appears translucent before dealing damage. Rubble attack now makes rubble fly up faster as health lowers.
      • Shadow hand circle attack now spawns between 5 and 16 hands depending on health instead of always spawning 9, shadow hand rotation is now randomized, and their velocity now scales as health lowers.
      • Number of shadow hands spawned when directly above it now scales between 3 and 10 as health lowers instead of always being 6.
      • Can now despawn if all players are dead.
    • Now moves faster, ice spikes last longer, passively spawns shadow hands faster, shadow hands move faster, spawns more rubble in a denser spread, and makes rubble fly up faster and at a faster rate in Death Mode.
    • Now spawns even more rubble in an even denser spread, rubber flies up even faster, ice spikes last even longer, spawns more shadow hands in the shadow hand circle attack that have faster velocity, and spawns more shadow hands when directly above it in Revengeance Master Mode.
  • 2.0.3.008: Fixed shadow border still drawing at full opacity if the player dies and respawns far away from the boss.
  • 2.0.3.007:
