The Leviathan and Anahita are a duo of bosses that are intended to be fought after Plantera. Fighting them earlier is possible but challenging.
Spawn
To begin the boss fight, the player has to kill the ??? in the Ocean. Doing this will spawn Anahita at first, and The Leviathan herself will only spawn when Anahita is at 40% health.

Behavior
This boss encounter is made up of 2 individual bosses: Anahita and The Leviathan. Both bosses must be defeated to count as a full defeat and receive loot.
At the start of the battle, only Anahita is summoned. When she is at 40% health, she dives to the floor and becomes invisible and invulnerable and stops attacking the player. During this time, a brief sequence plays in which the screen rumbles and the ocean's water churns, then The Leviathan spawns rising from the water. When The Leviathan is at 40% health, Anahita returns to the fight and both bosses become active simultaneously for the remainder of the fight until they are defeated.
If the player leaves the Ocean during the battle, the bosses will enrage, greatly increasing Anahita's fire rate and both Anahita and The Leviathan's movement and projectile speed.
Anahita
Anahita loosely hovers over the player and attacks them using a semi-random attack pattern consisting of projectile rings, homing bubbles, and dashes. She also spawns with an Ice Shield that blocks non-minion piercing projectiles and protects her from damage until it is destroyed, which respawns when Anahita is at 70% and 40% health. Anahita's movement, attack, and projectile speed increases the lower her health is.
- Phase 1 (100-70% health)
- Summons a ring of projectiles around the player in a radial pattern that then converge inward. These can consist of:
- 8 Water Spears, which continue to travel in a straight line after converging.
- 3 Frost Mists, which home on the player for one second after converging and inflict the Frostburn and Chilled debuffs.
- 6 Treble Cleves, which rapidly lose speed and become stationary, lingering for an extended period of time, and inflict the Dazed debuff.
- Projectile rings will always be used in the looping order of water spears, then frost mists, then treble clefs.
- After every 2 sets of projectile rings, fires a stream of 5 Detonating Bubbles, which home in on the player and inflict the Wet debuff. These bubbles can be destroyed by any attack.
- Summons a ring of projectiles around the player in a radial pattern that then converge inward. These can consist of:
- Phase 2 (70-40% health)
- Anahita's behavior remains the same, with the exception that her projectile rings contain more projectiles and have a smaller diameter, spawning closer to the player.
- The number of water spears increases from 8 to 12, the number of Frost Mists increases from 3 to 4, and the number of treble clefs increases from 6 to 9.
- Anahita's behavior remains the same, with the exception that her projectile rings contain more projectiles and have a smaller diameter, spawning closer to the player.
- Phase 3 (>20% health and the Leviathan is present)
- Anahita's behavior returns to that of phase 1, with the exception that Anahita, her attack speed, and all of her projectiles are slower.
- Phase 4 (<20% health or <40% health and the Leviathan has been defeated)
- Anahita's behavior returns to that of phase 2, and her movement, attack, and projectile speed returns to normal. Additionally, she only summons 1 ring of projectiles between Detonating Bubbles and also gains a charging attack she can use in place of and/or alongside Detonating Bubbles.
- Backs off from the player slightly before charging at them 3 times. Anahita lines up her 1st and 3rd charges from the top left or top right of the player, and her 2nd charge from the left or right of the player.
- Anahita has an equal chance of either charging or firing Detonating Bubbles, and each attack after this has an equal chance of having her continue to alternate between charging and firing bubbles or having her return to summoning projectile rings.
- Anahita's behavior returns to that of phase 2, and her movement, attack, and projectile speed returns to normal. Additionally, she only summons 1 ring of projectiles between Detonating Bubbles and also gains a charging attack she can use in place of and/or alongside Detonating Bubbles.
The Leviathan
The Leviathan hovers to the side of the player and attacks them by spitting meteors, spawning Aquatic Aberrations, and occasionally charging at the player. The lower the Leviathan's health is, the faster she moves and the less time she spends spitting meteors at the player.
- Phase 1 (100-70% health)
- Spits a steady stream of large meteors at the player that inflict the Armor Crunch debuff.
- Meteors cannot be angled more than 30 degrees above or below the direction the Leviathan is facing.
- The Leviathan slowly and steadily tries to hover to the side of the player during this attack.
- As the Leviathan's health decreases, she will spend less time performing this attack, although her fire rate remains the same.
- Becomes stationery and spawns Aquatic Aberrations to attack the player.
- The Leviathan spawns 4 Aquatic Aberrations per cycle and cannot spawn any more if 3 already exist.
- The Leviathan quickly and loosely tries to hover to the side of the player during this attack if they are far away.
- The Leviathan constantly cycles between spitting Meteors and spawning Aquatic Aberrations.
- Spits a steady stream of large meteors at the player that inflict the Armor Crunch debuff.
- Phase 2 (70-40% health)
- No change occurs during this phase in Normal Mode. Other difficulties feature changes to behavior at this phase.
- Phase 3 (>20% health and Anahita is present)
- The Leviathan's speed decreases greatly, and she hovers further away from the player.
- The fire rate of the Leviathan's meteor spit is halved, and the meteors move slower.
- The Leviathan spends much less time spawning Aquatic Aberrations, only able to spawn up to 1 per cycle. Additionally, the Leviathan cannot spawn any Aquatic Aberrations during this phase if 1 already exists.
- Phase 4 (<20% health or <40% health and Anahita has been defeated)
- The Leviathan's speed, meteor spit, and ability to spawn Aquatic Aberrations returns to normal. Additionally, she gains a charging attack where she backs away from the player to a minimum distance and lining up to the side of them before charging at them in a horizontal line.
- The Leviathan's charges become faster and shorter the lower her health is.
- During phases where the Leviathan can charge at the player, she can randomly select any of her attacks she has not used yet, and she also hovers closer to and above the player when spawning Aquatic Aberrations.
- The Leviathan's speed, meteor spit, and ability to spawn Aquatic Aberrations returns to normal. Additionally, she gains a charging attack where she backs away from the player to a minimum distance and lining up to the side of them before charging at them in a horizontal line.

- The Leviathan spends less time spawning Aquatic Aberrations, only able to spawn up to 3 per cycle instead of 4.
- The Leviathan's spawn cap for Aquatic Aberrations is 2 instead of 3.
- Aquatic Aberrations push themselves away from each other.

Summons
Image | Name | Condition |
---|---|---|
Detonating Bubble | Anahita is active | |
Aquatic Aberration | The Leviathan is active |
Resistances
- The Leviathan take reduced damage from most non-minion piercing projectiles. Each hit decreases the damage of the next hit by 12%, until the eighth hit onwards which deal 20% of original damage.
Aftermath
- Giant Cursed Skulls will begin to drop Keelhaul.
- Enemies in the Abyss begin dropping Depth Cells and Lumenyl.
- Hydrothermal Crates will contain Lumenyl, Depth Cells and Planty Mush.
- The Floodtide will be obtainable via Fishing.
Notes
- Even though the summon appears even at the very beginning of the game, it is not recommended to fight this boss until later in Hardmode.
- In the possible, though unlikely circumstance that the Leviathan and Anahita are lured to the Sulphurous Sea biome, it will be considered as the Ocean and they will not be enraged.
- Both Anahita and the Leviathan will each drop 5-15 Greater Healing Potions separately when killed.
- When players have the Wet debuff, Anahita's projectiles have a lower velocity.
- Even with Anahita's many resistances, they are neither immune to the Poisoned nor the On Fire! debuffs.
Tips
- For more elaborate strategies on defeating Leviathan and Anahita, including weapon and arena recommendations, see Guide:Leviathan and Anahita strategies.
- Making 3-4 layers of platforms that are the whole length of the Ocean may make it easier to dodge their attacks.
- Once the Leviathan has reached 50% of her health, care should be taken to be aware of where she is as she will start charging the player. Should she be on the left or right side of the player, it is important to dodge it either moving down or above where the Leviathan is going.
- Because the Leviathan's meteors are launched from her mouth, caution should be taken when moving past her while she is in the middle of firing. The spot where the meteors come from will flip sides suddenly when the Leviathan turns around to face the player, and due to her massive size, this can lead to meteors coming from the direction they are moving in.
- Using Water Candle, Chaos Candle, Battle, and Zerg buffs in combination will make ??? spawn over 5x more often, making the bosses much more readily available.
- This will also increase the spawn rate of ocean enemies, so be cautious.
Trivia
- Anahita's theme is Siren's War Cry, which was composed by the artist DM DOKURO.
- Siren's War Cry is the only Calamity theme to not be featured in its own video, instead only appearing in an "Extended" version alongside the other themes for Leviathan and Anahita. This is because Siren's War Cry was made sometime after the other 2 themes, in response to a rework to the fight which now included Anahita being fought on her own.
- When The Leviathan appears, the theme changes to Forbidden Lullaby, which was also composed by DM DOKURO.
- The dual nature of the fight took inspiration from the Ornstein and Smough fight from Dark Souls.
- In previous versions of the mod, Anahita had 2 color schemes with one randomly being chosen upon her spawning. Some of her features would be either greener or more blue. This was the reasoning for the Aquatic Heart having two variants based on color.
- Anahita was previously named The Siren. Prior to that, she was known as the Siren Lure.
- If the Boss Checklist Mod is enabled, their unique despawn message will be "The aquatic outcasts return to their lonesome company."
- If Anahita is killed before The Leviathan is able to spawn, it will still count as a victory, despite only one of the two bosses being defeated.
Bestiary entries
- Anahita: "Once a resident of the Abyss, she left it long ago due to Silva's influence spreading through her former home. She wishes to see all overtaken by the ocean, so that her domain may encompass the world. Such is the nature of all elementals."
- The Leviathan: "A gargantuan marine reptile that lurks the ocean depths along with the Water Elemental, Anahita. It is unknown if she is the last of her kind, or was simply manifested into existence like her master."
