The Prism-Back is a Pre-Hardmode enemy that spawns in the Sunken Sea. It swims back and forth passively and is always passive even when attacked. However, despite being passive, it can still deal contact damage and will deal even more contact damage if the player touches the top of its spiked shell.

Prism-Backs receive a boost to their stats when the world enters Hardmode.


  • Players should avoid getting in the path of Prism-Backs, as they deal high contact damage at the point in the game they are encountered and will not try to run away from the player.
  • If a Prism-Back ends up out of water, it will be unable to move.


  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for the Prism-Back: "Due to the beautiful prisms and calm behavior, these animals have been taken in as pets by many over the course of centuries, even outside of Ilmeris. Though far too slow and bulky to hunt normally, the sea prisms on their back act as a lure for small fish."


These history sections are still a work-in-progress, and may not yet contain changes relevant to the current version of the Calamity Mod.
    • Now has 25% less health and 10% less damage in Master Mode.
    • No longer deals 25% Revengeance Mode / 40% Death Mode more damage.
    • Nerfed damage multiplier when getting hit by it on the top from 2x / 4x Expert Mode / 4.2x Revengeance Mode / 6x Death Mode to 1.25x / 2.5x Expert Mode / 2.75x Revengeance Mode / 3x Death Mode.
  • Now vulnerable to electricity and sickness debuffs, but resistant to water and heat debuffs.
  • Fixed minions being unable to damage it.
  • Nerfed contact damage from 20 / 40 Expert Mode / 50 Revengeance Mode / 57 Death Mode to 20 / 40 Expert Mode / 50 Revengeance Mode / 56 Death Mode.
  • Fixed it dropping 25 copies of gores when killed.
