Skeletron is a Pre-Hardmode boss that is intended to be fought after the The Hive Mind or The Perforators. Defeating it is required to gain unrestricted access to the Dungeon.

Spawn

Skeletron will not spawn on its own. It is instead summoned by speaking to the Old Man at the Dungeon's entrance and selecting the "Curse" option at night.

Once Skeletron has been defeated for the first time and the Clothier has moved in, the player can summon Skeletron again by killing the Clothier using the Clothier Voodoo Doll. This must be done at night or Skeletron will not spawn.

In Revengeance Mode

Skeletron is composed of three segments - two hands and a head - all of which can travel through blocks. The head is the only segment that must be destroyed to defeat Skeletron, though each hand alive will give the head maximum damage reduction, and while either is still alive, the head will not be targeted by summons or homing weapons. Its attack frequency will gradually increase as its health lowers.

While the hands are alive, they will attempt to hit the player by swinging towards them. While the head is spinning, the hands will raise and not swing at the player.

The head initially will only have one attack but will gain more as the fight progresses. Its only attack at the start of the fight is an attack where it will begin spinning, dealing increased contact damage and having decreased defense, while moving towards the player at an increasing speed.

Once a hand has been destroyed or the head reaches 75% health, the head will begin firing homing skulls toward the player every 1.33 seconds. Once both hands have been destroyed, the frequency becomes every 0.67 seconds. During its spin attack, it will pause shooting skulls.

Once both hands are destroyed, the head will begin to teleport, firing a spread of 3 bolts from where it teleports to.

When the head reaches 33% health, both hands will respawn. The head will fire skulls and teleport at a slower pace after the hands are respawned.

In Death Mode

  • Begins the fight and respawns with 4 hands instead of 2.
  • Head and hands have reduced health.
  • Head acceleration increases as health decreases.
  • Hand attacks have much more velocity and quicker acceleration.
  • Fires faster Cursed Skulls at a faster rate.
  • Shoots 5 magic bolts instead of 3 after teleporting.

During the Boss Rush

  • Max health increased to 160,000 / 320,000 Expert Mode / 400,000 Revengeance Mode.
  • Sets the time to 7:30pm.

Aftermath

Tips

For more elaborate strategies on defeating Skeletron, including weapon and arena recommendations, see Guide:Skeletron strategies.
  • Homing Skulls, despite their name, have poor homing abilities. They can be easily avoided by circling Skeletron, which will cause the skulls to curve to reach the player and miss.
  • If "stunlocked" by the head, grappling to a nearby platform or using the Slime Mount will forcibly pull the player out, which can be a lifesaver.
  • Avoid standing near the shadowflame circle as much as possible, as Skeletron fires bolts as soon as it teleports out, making the bolts much harder to dodge.
  • Watch for the hands' movements. They almost always take distance before trying to hit the player, as if Skeletron was building momentum.

History

These history sections are still a work-in-progress, and may not yet contain changes relevant to the current version of the Calamity Mod.
  • 2.0.4.002:
    • Buffed head and hand damage in Master Mode from 132 Master Mode to 165 Master Mode. Buffed skull projectile damage from 138 Master Mode to 144 Master Mode, and cursed bolt damage from 150 Master Mode to 156 Master Mode.
    • No longer resets velocity to zero if the head teleports while doing spin attacks.
    • Now has a longer delay between spin attacks while hands are alive.

    • Reduced skull projectile spread while outside of Revengeance Mode, and increased the range at which they stop homing.
    • Revengeance Mode changes:
      • Head damage reduction now scales between 5% and 99.99% based on health while hands are alive, instead of always being 99.99%.
      • Hands now have a slower swipe velocity, decelerate faster after swipes, and glow white as a telegraph before swiping.
      • Can now always teleport instead of only after the hands are dead, and changed the dust on the teleport telegraph.
      • Spin attack now has a telegraph, head will now back away from the player if too close, increased the maximum spin velocity as its health lowers, spin velocity now scales based on how many hands are alive, and Death Mode no longer makes it always spin at maximum velocity.
      • Hands now gain increased drawback and swiping velocity and swipe more often as Skeletron's health lowers.
      • Skull projectiles fired on teleports now have a constant speed instead of scaling with distance, increased their speed but decreased their acceleration, skulls now have uneven speeds, skulls no longer have increased speed in Death Mode, increased how many skulls are spawned but number of skulls decreases in later phases, number of skulls and their spread now inversely scale with how many hands are alive, and changed the dust that they use.
      • Slightly increased skull fire rate during idle phase, and it now increases further when below 85% health.
      • Now always backs away from the player before the spin attack, and uses a new spin charge attack where he spins faster and flies past the player after getting close when below 70% health.
      • Now fires several homing skulls at the end of the spin charge when below 50% health.
      • Now respawns hands at 50% health instead of 33%. Hands will attack much more often if the head is below 30% health.
      • Now stops shooting skull projectiles during idle phase, idle phase lasts for less time, and shoots Giant Cursed Skull bolts during the spin charge when below 30% health.
      • Now constantly does spin charges and teleports more frequently when below 10% health.
      • Increased despawn distance, and no longer teleports while despawning.
    • Now has a higher speed and acceleration when floating above the player, has a higher spin velocity, shoots more skulls in a larger spread when teleporting, hands have a higher maximum drawback and swipe velocity as health lowers, hands swipe more often as health lowers, fires skulls more frequently while spinning away, has a shorter minimum backup time when below 70% health, fires more skulls in a larger spread after the spin charge when below 50% health, and fires Giant Cursed Skull bolts at a faster velocity in Death Mode.
