Hive Mind Trophy.png "A hive of clustered microbial-infected flesh." Hive Mind Trophy.png

The Hive Mind is a Pre-Hardmode boss fought in The Corruption, with an immobile first phase and a floating, teleporting second phase.

It is the Corruption counterpart to The Perforators.

Spawn

The Hive Mind does not spawn on its own, and requires the player to summon it using a Teratoma or by killing a Hive Cyst in The Corruption.

Behavior

The Hive Mind is stationary in all of Phase 1, summoning Corruption-themed enemies at intervals based on its life. In Phase 2, it starts drifting slowly towards the player while performing various attacks.

The Hive Mind enrages outside The Corruption and on the Surface, each condition reduces the burrow time by one second in Phase 1. In Phase 2, speed is increased and attack transition time is decreased.

Attacks

Phase 1

  • Remains stationary where it was spawned and immediately summons 5 / 6 Expert Mode / 7 Revengeance Mode / 15 Death Mode Hive BlobHive Blobs by its side.
    • Hive Blobs stick around the hive and fire Vile ClotVile Clots every six seconds as long as they are farther than five tiles away from the player.
  • Burrows into the ground and reemerges near the player every 9 / 8 Expert Mode / 7 Revengeance Mode / 5 Death Mode seconds, to prevent them from straying too far away.
  • Has a 1/150 and 1/60 chance to spawn DevourerDevourers and Eater of SoulsEaters of Souls respectively when it takes damage.
  • Summons 2-3 / 3-4 Expert Mode / 4 Revengeance Mode / 5 Death Mode Hive BlobHive Blobs or Dank CreeperDank Creepers upon reaching 95%, 90%, and 85% health.
    • Dank Creepers slowly accelerate towards the player.
    • There may only be up to 1 / 1-2 Expert Mode / 2 Revengeance Mode / 2-3 Death Mode Dank Creepers summoned at once.

Phase 2

  • Transitions at 80% health.
  • Slowly drifts towards the player for 8-10 / 5-7 Expert Mode / 4.5-6.5 Revengeance Mode / 4-6 Death Mode seconds.
  • Lets out a higher pitched roar then dashes directly at the player while fading out and spawns a Dank CreeperDank Creeper, DevourerDevourer, and Eater of SoulsEater of Souls.
    • These enemies will not be spawned again until they are killed.
  • After fully fading out, the hive teleports away from the player and repeats its attack.

In Expert Mode

  • When a Dank Creeper is killed, it spawns a Shade NimbusShade Nimbus which lasts six seconds and rains shade every 0.75 seconds.
  • In Phase 2, drifts for less time and moves faster the lower its health.
  • After every two drift-dashes, the next teleport will be closer to the player. The hive will fully fade in while circling the player, lunge at them when at full opacity, then slows down and drifts towards the player.

In Revengeance Mode

  • Drift-dashes no longer spawn enemies.
  • Spin-lunges occur after every drift-dash.
  • Gains a new attack below 53% health. The hive appears below the player, flies in a semi-circle while spawning a Dank CreeperDank Creeper, Dark HeartDark Heart, DevourerDevourer, and Eater of SoulsEater of Souls, then slows down and drifts towards the player.
    • Dark Hearts rain shade onto the player every 0.4 seconds when above them.
    • This attack occurs between each spin-lunge attack.
    • These enemies will not be spawned again until they are killed.
  • Gains another new attack below 27% health. The hive appears above the player, dashes horizontally while spawning 10 Shade NimbusShade Nimbuses, then slows down and drifts towards the player.
    • This attack is randomly arranged with the spin-lunge and semicircle-dash attacks, and is never performed twice in a row.

In Death Mode

  • Moves very quickly and teleports extremely often in Phase 2.
  • Can use all attacks upon reaching 53% health.

On the For the worthy seed

  • Spin-lunges and Dark Heart shaderains happen twice as fast.
  • Dank Creeper health increased to 360 / 720 Expert Mode.
  • Dark Heart health increased to 600.
  • Hive Blob health increased to 400.
  • Hive Blobs hover further from The Hive Mind.
  • Hive Blob vile clot projectiles are faster.
  • Twice the amount of Hive Blobs can exist at once.
  • Shade nimbuses create significantly more rain.

Aftermath

Notes

  • During phase 1, The Hive Mind won't deal or take any damage while burrowing until it fully emerges.
  • During phase 2, The Hive Mind won't deal contact damage while it is teleporting and not fully opaque, but it can still be damaged.

Tips

For elaborate strategies on defeating the Hive Mind, including Weapon and Arena recommendations, see Guide:The Hive Mind strategies.
  • Leaving The Corruption will enrage The Hive Mind, making it more deadly.
    • Stay in The Corruption underground, as being on the surface will still enrage the boss, even if the player is in The Corruption.
      • Keep this in mind if building an arena; building too close the surface may take the player out of the underground.
  • Be wary of the Hive Mind's summons, making sure to clear them out every so-often, as they can easily overwhelm the player if left unattended.
    • During phase 1, The Hive Mind will summon a swarm of minions at 75%, 50% and 25% health. Keep this in mind while dealing heavy damage, as fighting off more than 1 swarm at a time can be overwhelming.
    • Phase 2 can be extremely chaotic, so clearing out all minions before starting the phase can be greatly helpful.
      • The Hive Blobs will instantly despawn upon entering phase 2, so it is best to focus on the other remaining minions.
    • The Dark Hearts' projectiles can cause a lot of damage if the player is not concentrated on dodging them.
  • The player can fight The Hive Mind at the start of the game, though it is not recommended to fight this boss until the Eater of Worlds is defeated, as its high speed and attack pattern can easily overwhelm an unprepared player.
  • During Hardmode, The Hive Mind can be fought to get a large amount of Cursed Flames. This is a highly effective way to get Cursed Flames in a Crimson world, as The Hive Mind can be fought on a Corruption island.

Trivia

  • The Hive Mind's theme is The Filthy Mind, which was composed by the artists DM DOKURO and SixteenInMono.
    • If the Calamity Music add-on mod is disabled, Boss 2 will play instead.
  • The Hive Mind can be fought before any boss is defeated, as Hive Cysts can spawn in The Corruption at any point of the game.
  • The Hive Mind could be considered the Corruption's version of the Brain of Cthulhu, while The Perforators could be considered the Crimson's version of the Eater of Worlds.
  • If the Boss Checklist Mod is installed, its unique despawn message will be "The corrupted colony began searching for a new breeding ground."

BestiaryBestiary entries

  • The Hive Mind: "Although Yharim's campaign would one day span the entire world, it all started in these lands with the massacre of ruthless dictator deities. As soon as their leaders fell at the hands of the Godseeker, their armies toppled like dominos. A hive mind cannot function without its brain, after all."
