The Twins are a Hardmode mechanical boss that can be summoned at night using the Mechanical Eye.

This guide will follow the mod's intended progression.

Terrain Preparation

The Twins will not enrage in any biome as long as it remains night, allowing the player to create as large an arena is required.

At minimum, the player should build a long set of two to three platforms and level the ground of the arena to act as a fourth layer. Place the platforms a good distance apart, around 25-30 blocks. Due to The Twins' extreme mobility and speed while flying, large arenas are very important. Campfires and Heart Lanterns are useful assets to boost the player's health regeneration, so they can be placed throughout the whole arena. Stars in Bottles may also be used to improve the player's mana regeneration.

The bottom layer of the arena can be built with Ice Blocks, increasing the player's acceleration and top speed, both of which are useful assets in the fight (provided the player is equipped with Frostspark Boots or their upgrades). Asphalt Blocks may also be used to increase the player's speed if The Twins are not the first mechanical boss they have faced.

Gearing Up

Armor

  • The reworked Hardmode ore armors will prove useful for melee, ranged, and magic players. The Calamity Hardmode progression rework means only Tier 1 ores are available before fighting any mechanical bosses in Hardmode.
    • If The Twins are the first mechanical boss the player is facing, then Cobalt armor and Palladium armor are both good for their movement-speed-scaling offensive boosts and powerful defensive boosts respectfully.
      • Statigel armor is still a decent choice at the very start of Hardmode for all classes, trading survivability for more raw damage and mobility.
    • If The Twins are the second mechanical boss the player is facing, then Mythril armor and Orichalcum armor are good choices. Mythril armor has great offensive boosts and Orichalcum armor has both powerful offensive boosts and good defense.
    • If The Twins are the player's final mechanical boss, then Titanium armor and Adamantite armor are good choices. Titanium armor has powerful defense and good offense, and Adamantite armor has great offense, especially for melee players.
      • Forbidden armor is a good set for mage and summoner players that removes summoner's damage penalty when holding another weapon.
  • Spider armor is a very useful early set for summoners, due to the extra minion slots it provides.
  • Titan Heart armor is a great choice for rogues.
  • Mollusk armor is a solid choice for most classes, however it cripples mobility which may not be desirable for this boss.

Accessories

Movement

  • If The Twins are fought before any other mechanical boss, Angel and Fairy Wings are the best choices for wings due to their great defensive boosts, but Demon Wings may be used instead if the player desires a more offensive approach.
  • Terraspark Boots or Fairy Boots are both good options for grounded movement during the fight, having increased mobility (especially on ice) or multiple stat bonuses, respectively.
  • The Counter Scarf or the Shield of Cthulhu allow the player to make sharp turns, being especially useful for dodging The Twins' dashes. They should always be a part of the player's arsenal when fighting this boss.
    • If the player has defeated one mechanical boss, the Evasion Scarf can also be used.
    • The Ornate Shield is also a great choice is the player has defeated two mechanical bosses as well as Cryogen.

Defensive

  • If getting hit disrupts your rhythm in the fight, the Cobalt Shield or the Cross Necklace (and their upgrades) will allow you to more smoothly recover in case of a mistake.
  • The Charm of Myths provides great boosts to life regeneration and allows for using healing potions more quickly.
  • The Flesh Knuckles provide a good amount of defense as well as 45 maximum health.

Offensive

Weapons

Melee

  • If the player has already defeated the Aquatic Scourge, then the Sulphurous Grabber is an extremely powerful yoyo.
  • The Celestial Claymore is a great option for The Twins, due to how often they dash at the player.
  • The Storm Saber is an efficient and powerful option for The Twins.
  • The Caustic Edge is good for an enclosed arena, and the debuffs it inflicts can help deal constant damage to The Twins.
  • The Forbidden Oathblade can be a powerful option if the player has already defeated Skeletron Prime, especially if the player has a high critical strike chance.
  • The Evil Smasher and Breaker Blade are strong true melee options for this fight.
  • The Shadowflame Knife is also a good option for dealing with The Twins.

Ranged

  • The Daedalus Stormbow with Napalm Arrows is extremely effective against this boss.
  • If the player has already defeated the Aquatic Scourge, then the Sea's Searing is a very powerful option for this boss.
  • The Polaris Parrotfish can kill The Twins very swiftly, with great homing if the player can remain untouched for long enough.
  • The Butcher can deal massive damage to The Twins, but it requires the user to charge up fully before it can reach its full potential.
  • The Megashark is a powerful option if the player has already defeated The Destroyer.
  • The Meowthrower is another pretty strong weapon that can beat The Twins effectively, although it can have a small range that may be dangerous against the aggression of The Twins.

Mage

  • If the player has already defeated the Aquatic Scourge, Slithering Eels is an extremely powerful option for The Twins.
  • The Serpentine is another powerful option, if no other bosses have been defeated before The Twins, that acts similarly to the Slithering Eels. It is especially powerful if the player builds Armor Penetration.
  • The Frigidflash Bolt is an excellent option for dealing with The Twins and inflicts two powerful debuffs.
  • Poseidon is a decent choice due to its piercing and homing capabilities.
  • The Crystal Serpent is a good choice, providing accuracy and high damage.
  • It is highly recommended that players use the Golden Shower to inflict Ichor.
  • The Nimbus Rod should be used mainly as a support weapon for constant damage against the boss.
  • The Glorious End can be used as a way to gain immunity frames and dodge attacks more easily, while also being a high-risk way to deal tons of damage. It should be utilized with the Cobalt Shield or other accessories that provide knockback immunity as well as the Cross Necklace for the best results.

Summoner

  • If the Brimstone Elemental has already been defeated, then the Dormant Brimseeker is a very powerful option, especially when utilizing the aura.
  • The Ancient Ice Chunk's Ice Claspers provide excellent damage, though it may be hard to hit The Twins.
  • The Shellfish Staff is a very strong choice. The shellfish should be summoned directly on The Twins after beginning the fight to inflict the powerful debuff.
  • The Sanguine Staff is another powerful option for The Twins with good AI.
  • The Tavernkeep Rods can be used for extra firepower and can provide good steady damage when The Twins are hard to hit.
  • The Caustic Staff is an excellent choice as a support minion and can be used for debuffing The Twins with several different effects.
  • Firecracker is the best option for a whip against The Twins.
    • The Slime Puppet Staff can be used as an alternative to whips that will likely deal more damage.

Rogue

  • The Blazing Star is an excellent choice for Rogue users, due to its very powerful stealth strike which homes.
  • The Ichor Spear and Cursed Dagger are both very powerful options that inflict Ichor and Cursed Inferno Respectfully. They are especially powerful in enclosed arenas.
  • The Cobalt Kunai does great damage and has powerful homing on its stealth strike.
  • The Prismalline is an excellent option for Rogue users as it is non-consumable with good damage. To maximize DPS, the daggers should split right before hitting The Twins.
  • The Kelvin Catalyst is a very powerful option as well if Cryogen has already been defeated, however it may be difficult to obtain.
  • The Equanimity and the Gacruxian Mollusk are both solid options due to their multiple projectiles and homing capabilities.

Classless

  • The Golden Gun is a useful option for players with no other means of inflicting Ichor.

Miscellaneous

  • The Rod of Discord can aid in dodging The Twins' attacks. In addition, Calamity allows the Rod of Discord to be more easily obtained, as it can be bought from the Wizard in the Hallow biome.
  • A quick hook such as the Serpent's Bite can help with avoiding attacks.
  • The Slimy Saddle can serve as a makeshift downward dodge and can be helpful for dodging The Twins' fast attacks.

Notable Buffs

The Fight

Upon being summoned, Spazmatism will align itself vertically and shoot several Cursed Flame fireballs at the player, which can generally be dodged by constantly flying upwards. After this, it will do 8 quick, short dashes towards the player. Retinazer alternates between hovering above the player, shooting bursts of 3 lasers and performing 3 long but slow dashes at the player. The lasers can be effectively dodged by continuing in the direction the player was moving when they were fired.

Upon reaching 70% health, a twin will enter phase 2. If one twin enters phase 2 while the other remains in phase 1, the twin in phase 2 will take almost no damage.

In phase 2, Spazmatism will perform an attack in which it slowly flies towards the player and spews shadowflame from its mouth. After this, Spazmatism will do 5 swift, long dashes towards the player. The Slimy Saddle or Gelatinous Pillion may prove helpful for this attack, due to their quick falling speeds. The player should also utilize their dash accessory to swiftly change directions. In phase 2, Retinazer will once again perform quick bursts of 3 lasers, although now it alternates this attack with one in which it falls to align with the player horizontally and fires a quick burst of 8 lasers. This attack can be dodged effectively by flying upwards or below and around Retinazer.

If a twin reaches 25% health, or if the other twin is defeated, then it will enter phase 3.

In phase 3, Spazmatism will now perform an attack in which it hovers below the player and fires lightly homing Shadowflame fireballs. This attack can generally be dodged by moving in a circle around the fireballs or utilizing the dash accessory to swiftly move out of the way of the fireballs. As well as this, its dashes are faster and longer, it spends less time using its shadowflame flamethrower attack, and moves faster during said attack. Retinazer now gains an attack in which it performs two long dashes after firing a laser barrage, shooting homing darts in a linear pattern along its first dash. This attack can be dodged in much the same way as Spazmatism's shadowflame fireballs. Once again, the Slimy Saddle or Gelatinous Pillion mounts may prove helpful in this phase.

If Retinazer is defeated first, then Spazmatism will stop performing its shadowflame flamethrower attack altogether. It will also gain a new set of dash attacks in which it performs 4 long and quick dashes, and then a final, longer dash before firing shadowflame fireballs once more. This attack can be very easily dodged by leading the shadowflame fireballs in a circle. Spazmatism itself will generally not be able to catch you, and the fireballs will be too slow to hit you. Using the map overlay can be very useful as well in order to tell where exactly Spazmatism is. If Spazmatism is defeated first, Retinazer will shoot laser barrages much more quickly and gain a new dash attack in which it performs 4 quick dashes, releasing homing darts on the first and last dashes. The laser barrages can be dodged in much the same way as previous phases, by either flying up or falling below and around the boss. The dash attack can be dodged effectively by leading the homing darts in a circle pattern, similar to Spazmatism's shadowflame fireballs.

In Death Mode

  • As their health decreases, the speed and acceleration of The Twins increases, and their attack delay is reduced.
