The Brimstone Elemental is a Hardmode boss that can be fought after defeating one Mechanical Boss. The Brimstone Elemental can be spawned by using a Charred Idol in the Brimstone Crag biome.

This guide will follow the mod's intended progression.

Terrain Preparation

As for most bosses, arena preparation is essential. It is advised to clear out a decent area between the top of the underworld and right above the lava level of the area and use two or three rows of platforms to enable you to dodge the attacks more freely. Leaving the Brimstone Crag or Underworld will cause the Brimstone Elemental to enrage, so the arena should remain within the biome. The width of your arena will vary based on world size, but having your arena extend the length of the Brimstone Crag is not a bad idea. Any patches of lava should be covered up, and uneven terrain at the bottom of the arena should be leveled.

Gearing Up

Armor

  • Melee, magic, and ranged users have the widest array of options at this point, due to the reworked early Hardmode armors.
    • Cobalt armor will provide good mobility and damage bonuses based on the player's speed, and Palladium armor will provide good defense and life regeneration bonuses.
    • Mythril armor will generally provide the best damage of any armors available at this point.
    • Adamantite armor is a solid choice due to its high defense bonuses and damage bonuses scaling with the player's damage reduction and defense.
  • If Cryogen and at least two mechanical bosses have been defeated, Daedalus armor is a good option for all classes.
    • Summoners may opt for Spider armor instead, should they prefer a more offensive approach, due to its extra minion slots.
    • Titan Heart armor is also a solid option for Rogues.

Accessories

Movement

  • There are several wings that you can choose from at this stage:
    • Angel and Fairy Wings are both excellent choices, providing incredible defensive boosts to help the player's survivability during the fight.
    • Starlight Wings provide good mobility and extra offensive bonuses when paired with Daedalus armor.
    • Harpy Wings are a good option due to their great mobility when paired with the Harpy Ring or Angel Treads.
    • Bat Wings are an all-around solid option that provide minor damage boosts during the night.
    • Butterfly Wings are a great choice for magic users due to the multiple bonuses they provide.
  • The Aero Stone, Harpy Ring or Frog Leg can be utilized to give an extra boost to movement speed and vertical motion.
  • Terraspark or Fairy Boots are both helpful for keeping up with the Brimstone Elemental's speed, with the former granting the player the ability to walk on lava and the latter providing multiple stat bonuses.
  • If three mechanical bosses have been defeated, the Angel Treads, a combination of the Terraspark Boots and Harpy Ring, are preferred to save an accessory slot.
  • Dash-providing accessories like the Evasion Scarf, Shield of Cthulhu, and the Ornate Shield can be helpful to keep the Brimstone Elemental at a distance and dodge projectiles.

Offensive

Defensive

  • The Abaddon is the perfect accessory during this battle, providing resistance to the Brimstone Flames debuff inflicted by all of the Brimstone Elemental's attacks. It additionally provides some offensive benefits.
  • The Ankh Shield provides solid defense as well as immunity to knockback, allowing for better survivability and easier dodging.
  • The Charm of Myths is a good defensive accessory for all classes, providing great boosts to life regeneration and allowing quicker use of healing potions.
  • If the player is getting hit too often during the fight, the Star Veil can be a useful option due to its increased invulnerability frames.

Weapons

  • It is sometimes preferable to fight the other bosses at this tier in progression to have a much wider array of options, some of which are listed below.

Melee

  • The Submarine Shocker is an extremely powerful option that deals colossal amounts of damage but requires the player to stand extremely close to the boss.
  • Darklight Greatsword has decent DPS which can spike if the split projectiles connect, especially during Phase 2.
  • The Starnight Lance has excellent range and damage for this fight.
  • The Brimstone Sword and the Frostbrand are both good options to deal constant damage at farther distances.
  • Though Roxcalibur lacks the range to consistently hit during faster phases, it can deal massive amounts of damage during Phase 1, namely during her Brimstone Ray attack.
  • The Sulphurous Grabber is a solid option for a yoyo and does decent damage.
  • The Bonebreaker also does decent damage, especially when at close range.

Ranged

  • The Barinautical is an extremely powerful option that can deal massive damage to the Brimstone Elemental.
  • The Arbalest is extremely powerful but requires some build up to do bigger damage.
  • The Darkecho Greatbow is also a viable option for this fight.
  • The Megashark and the Butcher can deal decent damage to the Brimstone Elemental when paired with Ichor Bullets.
  • The Sea's Searing is an effective and powerful option for this fight.
  • The Mineral Mortar's numerous projectiles make aiming easier for this fight.

Mage

  • The Relic of Ruin is an excellent homing option that can garner massive DPS.
  • The Death Valley Duster can deal good damage to the Brimstone Elemental, but it requires the player getting extremely close to her.
  • The Ion Blaster is a very powerful option, provided you can manage your mana effectively.
  • The SHPC is very useful through the entire fight due to its extremely fast shots or massive area of effect damage.
  • The Nimbus Rod can be used to gain extra DPS on the Brimstone Elemental.
  • The Golden Shower can be used to inflict Ichor onto the Brimstone Elemental.

Summoner

Rogue

Miscellaneous

  • The Lunic Eye and the Golden Gun can make the fight easier to bear due to their powerful debuffs.
  • The Rod of Discord is a very useful tool as it allows instantaneous teleporting to avoid the numerous projectiles.

The Fight

The Brimstone Elemental spawns offscreen, flying towards the player. The Brimstone Elemental has 3 phases that she can randomly choose from throughout the fight. She will never repeat the same phase twice.

In the first phase, the Brimstone Elemental will teleport around the player and fly towards them. Before teleporting, red dust appears in a rectangle shape at her intended destination. The player should keep moving away from her and pay attention to the telegraphed locations she will teleport to in order to avoid damage.

In the second phase, the Brimstone Elemental attempts to stay above the player while shooting short-lived Brimstone Hellfireballs at the player in regular intervals. These projectiles create a lingering explosion upon collision or expiration, meaning the player should keep moving during this phase. Every second Brimstone Hellfireblast is accompanied by a spread of four longer-ranged Brimstone Darts. Moving in one direction at a similar or slightly faster speed relative to the Brimstone Elemental is generally sufficient to dodge this phase. It may be advisable to drop down one platform whenever the Brimstone Darts are launched in order to give yourself more time to dash away from them if necessary.

In the third phase, the Brimstone Elemental comes to a complete halt and drastically increases her defense, then begins to launch barrages of Brimstone Hellblasts and Brimstone Darts. Hellblasts are fired in arc shapes and are aimed at the player, while Darts are fired in an evenly spaced ring away Brimstone Elemental. Travelling too far away from her during this phase will lead to her firing a much larger and more dangerous ring of projectiles, so the player should avoid straying too far from her. This phase is best dodged by carefully circling her to avoid the Hellblast arcs, while weaving through the gaps in the Dart rings. If you must take a hit, it is preferable to get hit by the Darts than by the Hellblasts.

Below 50% health in Revengeance Mode and above, the Brimstone Elemental gains a new phase she can select. In this phase, the Brimstone Elemental moves towards the player, and then comes to a near-stop and fires a Brimstone Ray from her eye directly at the player's predicted destination. This attack is telegraphed with a tracking line that comes to a halt right before she is about to fire. This ray produces two lines of slow Brimstone Darts that move in opposite directions from one another and perpendicular to the Brimstone Ray. In Revengeance Mode, this ray fires twice during this phase. This attack is best dodged by circling the Brimstone Elemental, and being prepared to quickly move out of the way once the telegraphing line locks onto a position, either by dashing or using an item like the Rod of Discord. The Brimstone Darts can be dealt with by moving to the opposite side of the Brimstone Elemental from where the ray was fired, though it is also possible to carefully squeeze between the gaps in the darts.

In Expert Mode, the Brimstone Elemental begins moving and attacking more rapidly as her health decreases.

In Revengeance Mode, up to two Brimlings will be spawned to harass the player by teleporting around and occasionally firing Brimstone Fireballs. Killing them has no penalty, but they do respawn every time she teleports, making them a hassle to kill; therefore, they should be avoided rather than being targeted. Additionally, the Brimstone Ray attack will be used twice in its phase. Furthermore, once below 33% health the Brimstone Elemental will no longer enter her first phase.

In Death Mode, she will move and teleport faster in phase 1. In phase 2, her projectiles have greater speed, and she fires eight Brimstone Darts with each spread instead of four. In phase 3, her projectile speed is increased, and she fires a second inner ring of Brimstone Darts that is spaced between the gaps of the outer ring. In her Brimstone Ray phase, only one ray is fired. The ray is more accurate, and the darts created move slower but slightly home in on the player, meaning the player can no longer attempt to move through a gap in the line of darts.
