This is a guide for what buffs you should be using throughout the game for boss fights, and when upgrades become available. Certain buffs have conditions the player should consider, such as negative effects, being based on what gear the player is using, or varying in effectiveness based on the boss.

- ↑ 1.0 1.1 1.2 Flask of Poison is better for Deerclops, and Wall of Flesh, while Flask of Fire is better for Skeletron and Slime God.
- ↑ 2.0 2.1 2.2 Crumbling will only be better if you are using a weapon that does very high damage hits, against an enemy with at least 20-25% DR. If the enemy has both defense and DR, and you already have a way to reduce one, use the flask for whatever stat you are not already reducing.
Alcohol
Having more than 3 alcohol buffs at a time will make you take damage over time, as such it is only recommended to use up to 3 of the following. Note that White Wine, Star Beam Rye, and Ale/Sake mentioned in the class buffs section are also alcohol, and will count towards your limit of 3.
