Using the Crystal Storm to attack Target Dummies. Note the ability for the projectiles to bounce, and how they naturally slow down before eventually dissipating.

The Crystal Storm is a (Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions) Hardmode / (3DS version) pre-Hardmode magic weapon that quickly fires a slightly spreading flood of tiny, bouncing purple crystals. The crystals are unaffected by gravity and last for about three seconds each, losing velocity gradually until they dissipate or upon contact with enemies. Their speed or fade upon impact does not affect their damage output, and they also provide a small amount of purple light.

The Crystal Storm is the Hallow counterpart to the Corruption's Cursed Flames and the Crimson's Golden Shower, all of which require a Spell Tome and ingredients exclusive to their underground biome counterparts.

On the Nintendo 3DSNintendo 3DS version version, the Crystal Storm may be obtained prior to entering Hardmode as a 1/500 (0.2%) chance to drop from Arch Demons.

On the Desktop version Desktop version, Console version Console version, and Mobile version Mobile version, its best modifier is Mythical.

On the Old-gen console version Old-gen console version and Nintendo 3DSNintendo 3DS version version, its best modifier is either Masterful for mana conservation or Godly/Demonic for higher damage output. It cannot get the Mythical modifier due to its low mana cost.

Notes

  • Liquids will slow the Crystal Storm's projectiles, even after they exit the liquid body.
  • Its projectiles cannot pierce multiple targets, though its dense fire rate may create the illusion that they are.

Tips

  • Although its projectiles do not deal much damage individually, they overwhelm enemies with their quantity, and have enough knockback to keep crowds at bay.
  • The Crystal Storm may be preferable to the Magical Harp when piercing and repeat hits are not needed.
  • (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) While being useful early Hardmode, it is generally ineffective against any Hardmode bosses.
  • Its fast fire rate but low base damage makes it pair well with the Ichor debuff.

Trivia

  • Unlike most ricocheting projectiles, these crystals make no sound when bouncing off objects.
  • Since version 1.2.3, Crystal Storm cannot have any modifier that modifies its mana cost by 10% or less, such as Celestial, Manic, and Mythical. A Crystal Storm that obtained such a modifier prior to 1.2.3 will have a new random modifier chosen again automatically after the upgrade to 1.2.3, as that patch brought a reduction in mana cost that renders those modifiers incompatible.
    • (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) As of version 1.4.0.1, Crystal Storm can have the Celestial, Manic, and Mythical modifiers, as its mana cost has been raised to 5 again.
  • The initial spin of the projectiles is determined by the angle at which they are fired. When fired horizontally in either direction, the projectiles spin very rapidly. Conversely, firing straight up or down will yield little to no spin.
