For strategies on gathering souls, see Guide:Harvesting Souls.

Soul of Light is a Hardmode crafting material dropped by most enemies killed in the Underground Hallow (in the Cavern layer) with a 1/5 (20%) / 9/25 (36%) chance. This also includes enemies not native to the biome such as Granite Elementals. For details about enemies dropping souls, see Notes. They can also be dropped by some Underworld enemies.

Crafting all items, excluding the boss-summoning items and Key of Light(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), requires (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 118 / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 89 Souls of Light. One of each boss-summoning item and a Key of Light require an additional (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 24 / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 14 Souls of Light, for a total of (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 142 / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 103 Souls of Light.

Notes

  • The drop conditions of Souls of Light are as following:[1][2]
    • The world is in Hardmode.
    • The player is in a Hallow biome when killing enemies.
    • The enemy must die in the Cavern layer and below
      • In a Don't dig up(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) or Get fixed boi(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) world, this condition is not applied.
    • The enemy's health is more than 1 (i.e. not a spell, Fungi Spore, Spore, etc.).
    • The enemy drops at least 1 CC (i.e. Statue-spawned enemies, Meteor Heads during Hardmode, boss minions, etc. will not drop souls).
    • The enemy is not a boss, a Slimer with wings, (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and certain slimes:
  • Tips

    • One of the best ways to farm for Souls of Light is to go to the Underground Hallow, and deep underground where lava spawns frequently, and place a few Water Candles. The enemies the Underground Hallow spawns do not go through blocks (except for Enchanted Swords) and are not special in any real way, so they get affected by the lava and drop Souls of Light. This is also effective for any other item dropped by Underground Hallow enemies.
    • (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) Another easy way to farm these is to go to the Underground Hallow and summon King Slime using the Slime Crown. All of the Blue Slimes he summons have a chance to drop Souls of Light (this method will also work for the Soul of Night).

    Trivia

    • Although the tooltip reads 'The essence of light creatures', Souls of Light can be dropped by enemies that are not native to the Underground Hallow.
    • In the 1.3 trailer, the Soul of Light used its old sprite.
