The Lunar Flare attacking Target Dummies. Note how it possesses the unique ability to pass through blocks.

The Lunar Flare is a Hardmode, post-Moon Lord magic weapon that summons three projectiles that rain down from above the game screen per every use. These projectiles appear as turquoise streaks and explode upon impact with an enemy or solid block. However, the Lunar Flare's projectiles are also capable of passing through blocks if the cursor is also within solid blocks, and will explode upon reaching the cursor's altitude or upon hitting enemies in these instances. The Lunar Flare has a 2/9 (22.22%) chance to be dropped from the Moon Lord.

Its best modifier is Mythical.

Notes

  • The Lunar Flare's projectiles emit a significant amount of light, but not when passing through solid blocks.

Tips

  • Unlike most weapons that summon projectiles from above (e.g. Starfury, Meteor Staff), Lunar Flare projectiles pass through any blocks necessary to arrive at the target point, making it a viable weapon even in enclosed areas.
  • The Lunar Flare is a formidable weapon, but its high mana cost may be difficult to manage without the use of a Mana Flower or any of its upgrades.

Trivia

  • The Lunar Flare can be considered a direct upgrade of the Blizzard Staff due to its similar mechanics, higher damage, and its ability to pass through any blocks above the cursor.
  • Its name parodies the solar flare, a real-life astronomical phenomenon.
