Blizzard Staff in action.

The Blizzard Staff is a Hardmode, post-Plantera magic weapon that rains four damaging, non-piercing icicles from above which are directed in the general location of the cursor per every use. Modifiers that boost speed by 10% or more will make it shoot six icicles per use. The Blizzard Staff is dropped from the Ice Queen during the Frost Moon event with a 4.44–7.78% (15.56–31.11%) chance depending on the current wave.[1]

Its best modifier is Mythical.

Notes

  • The Blizzard Staff's projectiles are initially spawned above the player and slightly off-screen, and then fly to the cursor's location.
    • Since the projectiles cannot go through solid blocks, they are likely to be blocked by solid blocks above the player before they reach the player's depth. The weapon is therefore much more effective in open areas.
    • On the Mobile version Mobile version, opening the inventory moves the player's screen up several tiles. If the player taps the top-center of the screen to use the Blizzard Staff in this condition, the spawned icicles will fly in random directions, as the "cursor" location is surrounded by the spawn point of projectiles.
  • The velocity of the projectiles is reduced when passing through liquids.
  • Internally, the Blizzard Staff shoots 2 icicles per use, has a use time of 5, and each use takes 10 ticks.[2][3] This makes the Blizzard Staff shoot two times (4 icicles) per use. Modifiers that boost speed by 10% or more will reduce the use time to 4, which makes the Blizzard Staff shoot three times (6 icicles) per use.

Tips

  • The Blizzard Staff can be considered an upgrade of the Meteor Staff, though the Blizzard Staff's projectiles do not pierce or explode. The Lunar Flare(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) can be considered a direct upgrade of the Blizzard Staff, as its projectiles travel through blocks, are more precise, and have a higher DPS.
  • Aiming lower increases this weapon's accuracy, although this is less noticeable the lower the player aims it.

History

  • Desktop 1.2.3:
    • Mana cost increased from 5 to 9.
    • Fixed bug where the Blizzard Staff could shoot upwards if the player is standing at the bottom of The Underworld.

  2. A tick is a time unit countable by the software. Most of Terraria's updating logic happens every tick. A tick has the length of 1/60th of a second, hence there are 60 ticks in a second and 3600 ticks in a minute.
