IbanPlay is a Legendary Minion, released as part of the Calamity Mod Development Team expansion pack in January 2020. This powerful unit integrates into the set as the team's Lead Artist since September 2021, with the secondary role of programmer.

Centered over his head, IbanPlay features the rare Throneturn ability. Ibanplay's Throneturn ability is directly based on Overlord's Barricade ability, but also multiplies it by 32 (in a sense). What it does is that IbanPlay turns invisible in the Calamity Portal, but leaves behind a fake copy of himself, allowing him to move around (see RLV's "Ibanplay does NOT have stealth!" section). When IbanPlay's throneturn is used, the fake IbanPlay will send out an Explosion that lasts for 1 minute (during which the IbanPlay in the Calamity Portal disappears). This is because there is an explosion spell which is technically more powerful than Barricade (not sure which one) called Stonehenge (tournament version). Throneturn does not have a cooldown.

Naming

Unlike all other Calamity Mage forts and the all other Calamity Mage unit summons, the IbanPlay himself is called "The Chosen One" in the lorebook.

  • His name comes from the Hebrew name "Ibbas" meaning "leader". The translation into Latin was "Ibanus" meaning "Ibrahim".
  • His name can also be "Ibanius" spelled as "Ibanus". This name comes from the Latin form of "Ibrahim", since "Ibbas" is also Latin for "Ibrahim", meaning "Al-Ibrahim" or "the beloved one".

In literature, Ibanus can also be found in the story of "The Life of James Axl Rupp", where he would stand to the south of Dundrod as a foreshadower of the imminent breakout of Bredebow, the kingdom's most violent hill. Ibanus also appears in Calamity Mage: The Shrine Maiden as a member of the heroes' guiding spirit.

Iban Play's portrait was once sketched for the official lorebook with the tagline: "Ibanius forever." The name that was used for the portrait was then reused for the Nexus's Calamity Mage Ibanus.

Ibanplay does NOT have stealth!

While one might think that the Throneturn ability gives Ibanplay Stealth, it actually buffs him even more. The effect is that IbanPlay becomes invisible in the Calamity Portal and can only be seen while actively attacking someone or when attacking himself.

Tips

  • Ibanplay is a unit that can summon a legion of Calamity Mages, and bring the army to victory if he has the Chosen Arcane ability active.
  • If you do not want to spawn IbanPlay (or the 3rd legion, if the first legion had been defeated), you can cancel them by pressing 'IbanSet' on the selection screen.

Notes

  • It's pronounced EE b aa n.
  • The unit obtains a passive healing aura for all allies when playing on the roof.
  • The Temporal Sadness debuff it applies can be used to great effect in a dps focused team.
  • Unlike other Dark Lord users, he cannot be killed.
  • Once a battalion of IbanPlay's first legion has arrived, all the friendly units in that territory will go into rage mode and provide easy and controllable fire to an army led by IbanPlay.
  • In the "Calamity Mage Channel", there are various named minions that can be summoned. These minions have a slightly reduced cooldown when summoned by IbanPlay.

Quotes

  • "NGE "IbanPlay" "wuz this and I'm wat thnks, errd. Err but-uhm hmmm. Well, not this, duh."
  • "Out. Now". (As revealed in Calamity Map #1, their last known words before the Meltdown Map's destruction)

Trivia

  • IbanPlay is not a disciple of the Dark Lord, as this is only implied by his name. However, he seems to be a very faithful disciple of KV-7 .
    • Regardless of whether he actually is an evil priest of the infernal lord, all of the IbanPlay's actions seem to be motivated by pure malice. This can be easily observed by taking into account his constant quest for ever more powerful units to enslave.
  • They used to possess the most wiki points out of anyone before the wiki.gg transfer.
    • IbanPlay once owned 3,203,777,742 wiki points before the wiki points transfer, ranking him at the first place for wiki points ever owned.
    • While we can't currently confirm IbanPlay's birth date, we can pretty confidently say that his personal journals probably date from before they started using wiki access.
  • Out of all the previous Calamity lead artists, this is the first one to ever have had a bounty put on their head ($5,000,000, for numerous counts of spriteslaughter).
  • Despite not being the mod owner, they possess the highest damage stat out of the entire team, being able to deal up to 48000 damage if fully upgraded.
    • This title was previously held by Inanis, before the patch that made undead units like them unable to deal damage.
  • In the context of Calamity Mage lore, IbanPlay does not seem to have a set role in the design process, as he also experimented with spell creation on his own.
    • IbanPlay is noteworthy for being the first Calamity Mage ever to enter the closed beta. (He joined the team before November 2016.)
    • This may be the first Calamity Mage to have his tongue tied.
  • The ability that spawned the Calamity Mage known as IbanPlay used to be named 'Amazing Agility'.
  • IbanPlay was seen as one of the most powerful mods of the first year of the Calamity mod.
  • IbanPlay is an extreme irony that the only Calamity Mage in EU West with an unbroken streak of victories and with the most kills was apparently one of the first Calamity Mage to make the Dark Lord cry.
    • The common name of Iban Play's portrait as of August 2014 is "Devil" due to the Dark Lord's obsession with devils, his bitter jealousy of Iban Play and his obsession with Calamity
