The Calamity Mod adds a great amount of content to the game, so this guide is intended to give the player some pointers on how to progress in the mod. Changes the mod makes to the base game's mechanics are also mentioned throughout this guide.

Mechanics

  • The mod adds the Rogue class, which has a unique stealth mechanic to deal extra damage and special attacks.
  • Several items, as well as modifiers, have been rebalanced throughout progression.
  • All other changed mechanics can be referred to here.
  • Difficulty modes can be enabled at the Difficulty Indicator:
    • Revengeance Mode and Death Mode are difficulty settings intended to be much more challenging than Expert Mode, introducing mechanics such as the Rage Meter and Adrenaline Meter, and new boss mechanics.
  • Certain mechanics of the mod can be changed in the configuration options.
  • Several bosses can be fought out of order.

Pre-Hardmode

Preparation

  • The player starts with the Starter Bag, which contains weapons for each class in the game, various Potions, and other items for exploration.
  • Wulfrum Metal Scraps and Energy Cores are new materials that can be crafted into useful gear.
  • All Biomes and the majority of Events have unique content added to each of them, so be sure to check through them for items that may be useful.
  • Several new structures spawn across the world:
    • In many biomes, Bio-center Labs are generated, which contain Dubious Plating, Mysterious Circuitry, and Schematics, which can be crafted into weapons. The Labs are defended with Lab Turrets that can only be destroyed by mining. The player can place tiles to block their shots.
      • The player should take Power Cell Factories to place near their base so they can start producing Draedon Power Cells for later.
      • The player should also take two Charging Stations: One to create a Codebreaker to decrypt the Schematics, and another to recharge the weapons crafted with the Schematics.
    • Planetoids spawn in Space:
      • Near the middle of the world, a large planetoid houses the Space Bio-center Lab, which contains Cinderplate and chests with Herb Bags and Planter Boxes.
      • Ore planetoids containing a large amount of a random ore.
        • These sometimes generate with a sword shrine, allowing access to the Enchanted Sword or Terragrim.
      • Biome planetoids containing loot from different biomes, such as Bezoars, Sharpening Stations, and Glowing Mushrooms.
      • Life Crystal planetoids containing a Life Crystal and some Amethyst or Topaz.
    • Shrines appear in different biomes, each with a unique accessory or mount for the player.
    • An Evil Island spawns in the sky above either the Dungeon or the Jungle, containing blocks and ore from the World Evil that is opposite to the one chosen during world generation, as well as its Biome Chest.
  • Certain enemies drop vanilla items for convenience:
    • Crawlers can be found in the Underground and Cavern layers, dropping their respective gems.
    • A complete list containing all the other available items may be found here.
  • NPCs also sell new items, including their dropped weapon if they have one.
  • Blood Moon enemies drop Blood Orbs, which can be used to craft most potions without needing their vanilla ingredients, but require the Alchemy Table from the Dungeon in order to be used.
  • King Slime can also be fought. Keep in mind that Calamity adds new drops for every boss, and it's worth it to defeat the vanilla ones to see what they have to offer.

Early Pre-Hardmode

  • If confident and well-equipped, the player should head to the Desert or Underground Desert, slay Stormlions for Stormlion Mandibles to craft the Desert Medallion to summon and fight the Desert Scourge. After defeating it, the player should make new gear with the Sea Remains.
    • The Sunken Sea is also unlocked. Most of its enemies are not dangerous unless provoked. The biome can also spawn the Giant Clam, which spawns the Sea King upon defeat. He sells many weapons and grants the Amidias' Blessing buff allowing for unlimited underwater breathing.
    • The Sunken Sea Bio-center Lab contains the Schematic (Sunken Sea).
  • After the Eye of Cthulhu is defeated, the Acid Rain may occur naturally, and the player is free to challenge its first tier in the Sulphurous Sea. This new biome replaces the Ocean on the Dungeon side of the world. It is also recommended that the player explore the Underground Jungle at this time, and take on events such as the Goblin Army or a Blood Moon.
    • While the Acid Rain event can be difficult, the enemies drop Sulphuric Scales which can craft weapons and the Sulphurous set.
    • While at the Sulphurous Sea, the player can loot Rusty Chests in the caverns beneath it.
      • Be careful not to go too far down, since the dark waters of the Abyss are quite different and much more dangerous.
  • The player may head to an underground Glowing Mushroom Biome and use the Decapodita Sprout and challenge Crabulon. Aside from weapons, it drops Mushroom Plasma Root in Revengeance Mode, which increases the duration of the Rage Mode buff by 1 second.
    • Alternatively, Crabulon may be summoned on a Mushroom Planetoid, but he will become slightly enraged above the Underground layer.
  • After defeating the Eater of Worlds/Brain of Cthulhu, The Hive Mind/The Perforators can be challenged. They are summoned by destroying a Hive Tumor or Perforator Cyst, respectively. After defeating either one, Aerialite Ore on Floating Islands becomes mineable and Aero Slimes will start spawning. Aerialite can be used for its own equipment, such as the Aerospec set, and the recipes contained in the Sunken Sea Schematic.

Late Pre-Hardmode

  • Queen Bee is an optional boss and defeating her is useful to unlock weapons, flasks and other drops.
  • The next goal of the player should be to defeat Skeletron. Upon his defeat, the Bandit NPC can now spawn, selling Rogue weapons and accessories. They also provide a refund service that returns some of the money spent reforging at the Goblin Tinkerer. After rescuing the Mechanic, the player can buy Wire to craft the second Codebreaker component, the Decryption Computer, which decrypts the Encrypted Schematic (Planetoid).
    • The first layer of the Abyss can be explored, and its Ancient Treasure Chests can now be opened. They contain weapons and other gear helpful for exploring the Abyss.
      • A bed, Pylon, or Magic Conch is helpful for going back after dying.
      • Due to the constant breath loss and dimness, the player should bring Arctic Diving Gear, Gills Potions, and Light Pets. Abyss Torches can also be found in Abyssal Treasures.
      • For now, the deeper parts of the Abyss are home to greater dangers which the player might not be well-equipped for.
  • The player can attempt to explore the Brimstone Crag at this point, though they should be wary of the powerful enemies that spawn in this biome.
  • The player can challenge The Slime God, which is summoned with an Overloaded Sludge. Its drops and the crafted Statigel set is valuable in the upcoming fight against the Wall of Flesh. The boss also drops the Electrolyte Gel Pack in Revengeance Mode, which increases the damage of Adrenaline Mode by 15% and increases how much damage reduction the player gains when hit while the meter is full by 5%.
  • The last step is to prepare for and defeat the Wall of Flesh. Aside from new weapons, the boss also drops a Rogue Emblem and a Crimson Key/Corruption Key.

Hardmode

Preparation

  • If the early Hardmode progression rework is enabled in the configuration options, Cobalt Ore and Palladium Ore will spawn upon defeating the Wall of Flesh.
    • Breaking Demon Altars or Crimson Altars will yield Souls of Night.
    • The Mythril Anvil and Orichalcum Anvil are unavailable until the defeat of one Mechanical Boss, but many recipes have been moved to the regular Anvil.
    • A full documentation of the early Hardmode progression rework can be found here.
  • The Drunk Princess NPC will move in if the player has Fabsol's Vodka in their inventory. She sells alcohols, which boost certain stats for the player, but with some downsides.
  • The Cloud Elemental and Earth Elemental can spawn in Space and the Cavern layers, respectively.
  • The Sunken Sea spawns new enemies and the Giant Clam miniboss is buffed, gaining new attacks and dropping various weapons and Mollusk Husks.
  • A new biome, the Astral Infection, spawns into the world, featuring powerful enemies which drop Starblight Soot. This material can be crafted into the Comet Shard which increases the player's maximum mana by 50, as well as other items.
  • Essences of Sunlight, Havoc, and Eleum are now available in Space, the Brimstone Crag and the Snow biome respectively, all of which can be used to craft new gear.
  • Life Fruits begin spawning immediately upon entering Hardmode.
  • The Brimstone Crag is intended to be explored at this point.
  • The Cosmolight is now obtainable, allowing the player to change the time to the next dawn, noon, dusk, or midnight.

Early Hardmode

  • Cryogen can now be summoned with the Cryo Key.
    • Its defeat spawns Cryonic Ore in the Ice biome for the Daedalus set and other weapons.
    • An Adamantite or Titanium Pickaxe is needed to mine the ore, requiring the defeat of 2 mechanical bosses.
    • The Archmage NPC also spawns and sells various items and weapons.
    • Cryogen drops the Frozen Key.
  • Aquatic Scourge is intended to be fought now. It rarely spawns in the Sulphurous Sea, but can be summoned using the Seafood.
    • Its defeat unlocks the second tier of the Acid Rain.
  • Queen Slime can be fought for the Hallowed Key and Souls of Light.
  • If the early Hardmode progression rework is enabled:
    • Mythril Ore and Orichalcum Ore will spawn upon the defeat of the first Mechanical Boss.
    • Adamantite Ore and Titanium Ore will spawn upon the defeat of the second Mechanical Boss.
    • Hallowed Ore will spawn in the underground Hallow following the defeat of the final Mechanical Boss, and all Mechanical Bosses will drop Hallowed Bars from that point onward.
  • After defeating a Mechanical Boss, the Brimstone Elemental can be summoned using the Charred Idol.
  • As soon as Mythril or Orichalcum Bars are available, the next Codebreaker component, the Long Ranged Sensor Array, can be crafted to decrypt the Encrypted Schematic (Jungle).
    • The Encrypted Schematic (Jungle) is in the Jungle Bio-center Lab, which can be located with the Green Seeking Mechanism and unlocks various recipes for late-Hardmode.
  • The souls dropped by the Mechanical Bosses along with Mythril or Orichalcum Bars can be used to craft the weapons from the Planetoid Schematic.
  • After all three Mechanical Bosses have been defeated, the Blood Orange can be crafted. When consumed, it permanently increases the player's maximum life by 25.
  • After all six bosses have been defeated, the player is recommended to fight either Calamitas Clone or Plantera.
  • After defeating Calamitas Clone, Solar Veils will drop from certain enemies during a Solar Eclipse.

Post-Plantera boss progression

  • After defeating Plantera, Cores of Sunlight, Havoc, and Eleum can now be made by combining Essences with Ectoplasm. If Calamitas Clone has been defeated, Cores of Calamity can also be made, which are an essential crafting material.
    • Perennial Ore will spawn underground.
    • Plantera drops the Jungle Key.
    • The Great Sand Shark may now spawn during a Sandstorm or be challenged using the Sandstorm's Core, providing a material called Grand Scales and the Desert Key.
    • The Armored Digger may appear in the Cavern layer, posing as a possibly dangerous threat.
  • The next bosses to fight are Leviathan and Anahita and Astrum Aureus.
  • After defeating Leviathan and Anahita, the middle area of the Abyss may now be explored in order to hunt for Depth Cells and Lumenyl, as well as dig for Planty Mush.
    • The player must be very careful within this area of the Abyss, as enemies can very easily overpower them, and the lack of significant lighting can make escaping the Abyss difficult under pressure.
    • As the breath loss increases as the player goes deeper into the Abyss, accessories such as the Abyssal Diving Gear and the Aquatic Emblem are highly recommended from this point onward.
  • Defeating Astrum Aureus causes the Astral enemies to gain increased stats and drop unique weapons.
    • The Astral Biome Chest also unlocks in the Dungeon, providing the Rogue class its own unique weapon, the Heavenfallen Stardisk.
    • In Revengeance Mode the Starlight Fuel Cell is dropped, which increases the damage of Adrenaline Mode by 15% and increases how much damage reduction the player gains when hit while the meter is full by 5%.
  • After Golem is defeated, the player may visit the Abyss to mine for Scoria Ore for the Hydrothermic set and new weapons.
    • Once the player has collected Scoria Bars, they can now make Life Alloys, which are an essential crafting material.
      • They are crafted with Cryonic Bars, Perennial Bars, and Scoria Bars.
    • The Miracle Fruit may also be crafted, increasing the player's maximum life by 25.
    • The Rift Reeler becomes available, which is exceptionally useful for obtaining potion ingredients and other useful items.
    • Several plague-related enemies including the Plaguebringer miniboss also begin to spawn in the Jungle, providing Plague Cell Canisters.
  • The player can now create an Advanced Display, the next Codebreaker component, and decrypt the Encrypted Schematic (Underworld).
    • The Encrypted Schematic (Underworld) is in the Underworld Bio-center Lab, which can be located with the Red Seeking Mechanism and contains post-Providence recipes.
  • The player may then fight The Plaguebringer Goliath, Empress of Light, Duke Fishron, Ravager and the Lunatic Cultist afterwards.
    • The Plaguebringer Goliath drops Infected Armor Plating, which can be used to craft the weapons in the Jungle Schematic.
    • Ravager drops the Infernal Blood in Revengeance Mode, increasing the duration of the Rage Mode buff by 1 second, as well as Fleshy Geodes, extremely useful items for crafting.
  • Before fighting the Moon Lord, the player can use a Titan Heart at the Astral Beacon to summon and fight Astrum Deus.
    • Defeating Astrum Deus allows the player to mine the Astral Ore at the meteor in the Astral Infection and craft new weapons as well as the Ethereal Core, boosting the player's maximum mana by 50.

Post-Moon Lord

  • Upon defeating the Moon Lord, several things will occur:
    • Outside of Master Mode, Moon Lord drops a Celestial Onion, which increases the player's accessory slots by one, like the Demon Heart.
      • Moon Lord's death additionally generates new Planetoids made of a large amount of Luminite and Exodium Clusters.
    • Several items can now be crafted with Luminite:
      • Many elemental themed weapons for all five classes can be obtained, along with new accessories.
      • Empyrean armor can be made as a Rogue alternative to the Lunar Fragment armors.
    • Several Profaned enemies will begin to spawn in both the Hallow and Underworld biomes. These enemies drop Unholy Essences, which can be used to craft many new items.
    • Phantom Spirits will begin to spawn in the Dungeon, similarly to Dungeon Spirits, that drop Necroplasm which can be crafted into Supreme Mana Potions.
    • The Profaned Guardians, Dragonfolly, and Polterghast can now be challenged, although it is recommended that Polterghast be fought later on.
      • Defeating the Dragonfolly will grant access to Effulgent Feathers, which can be crafted into the Blessed Phoenix Egg that is used to summon Yharon, Dragon of Rebirth, although it is highly recommended that the Player waits to fight him until The Devourer of Gods has been defeated.
      • The Red Lightning Container is dropped by the Dragonfolly in Revengeance Mode which is the third and final Rage upgrade, increasing the duration of the Rage Mode buff by 1 second.
    • The Rune of Kos can be crafted that is used to summon the three Rune of Kos bosses, although it is also recommended that they are fought post-Providence.
    • The Cosmic Worm can be alternately crafted to summon The Devourer of Gods, though it's highly recommended that it should be fought after Polterghast (and optionally The Old Duke) are defeated.
  • Once The Profaned Guardians are defeated, they will drop a Profaned Core, which is used to summon Providence, the Profaned Goddess.
  • Providence, the Profaned Goddess can drop different loot depending on if she was summoned within The Hallow or within The Underworld.
    • Optionally, the player can challenge Providence at night time, which will make the fight significantly harder but have additional drops.

Post-Providence, the Profaned Goddess

  • Uelibloom Ore is now available, allowing the Player to obtain Tarragon armor.
  • The items in the Underworld Schematic can now be crafted, including the next Codebreaker component, the Voltage Regulation System, which allows the decryption of the final schematic, Encrypted Schematic (Ice).
    • The Encrypted Schematic (Ice) is in the Ice Bio-center Lab, which can be located with the White Seeking Mechanism and contains recipes for post-Devourer of Gods weapons and the last Codebreaker component.
  • An Elderberry can now be crafted, which further increases the player's maximum life by 25.
  • Ravager, as well as enemies in the Brimstone Crag, become buffed and will now drop Bloodstone, allowing the player to create some of the items in the Bloodstone set.
    • The Brimrose can now be crafted with Bloodstone and Unholy Cores, which is a powerful mount that allows for infinite flight.
    • The Ravager will also now drop the Bloodflare Core and Necromantic Geodes, an upgraded version of the Fleshy Geode.
  • Providence will drop the Rune of Kos, which is used to fight the three Rune of Kos bosses.
    • Storm Weaver is fought in Space.
    • Ceaseless Void is fought in the Dungeon.
    • Signus, Envoy of the Devourer is fought in the Underworld.
  • Polterghast is now recommended to be fought, and upon its death, the abyssal mini-bosses will now drop new items, allowing the player to obtain several powerful weapons and accessories.
    • After defeating Polterghast, the player can fight the third tier of the Acid Rain and challenge The Old Duke.
    • Polterghast will drop the final Adrenaline upgrade in Revengeance Mode, the Ectoheart, which increases the damage of Adrenaline Mode by 15% and increases how much damage reduction the player gains when hit while the meter is full by 5%.
    • Polterghast will also drop Ruinous Souls, which is used to craft Bloodflare armor, Omega Blue armor, several additional weapons, and the Phantom Heart, which is the final mana upgrade.

  • Upon defeating all three Rune of Kos bosses, the Cosmic Worm can now be crafted, which is used to summon The Devourer of Gods.

Post-The Devourer of Gods

  • After defeating The Devourer of Gods, many things will happen:
    • Combining Cosmilite Bars, Luminite Bars, Galactica Singularities, Exodium Clusters, and a Hardmode Anvil, the Cosmic Anvil can be crafted, which will grant the player access to the many high tiers of items available in the Calamity Mod.
    • The Frost Moon, the Pumpkin Moon and the Solar Eclipse are immensely buffed, with certain enemies now dropping Endothermic Energy, Nightmare Fuel and Darksun Fragments respectively.
      • Ascendant Spirit Essence, which is an essential crafting material, can be crafted with these three materials along with Necroplasm.
      • After fighting one of the buffed events, several items can be crafted with Cosmilite Bars and Endothermic Energy/Nightmare Fuel or Darksun Fragments which can help when fighting the second buffed event, and then the third buffed event.
      • With this, God Slayer armor, Silva armor, the weapons in the Ice Schematic, as well as several other powerful accessories and weapons can now be crafted.
  • The player can now use the Ascendant Spirit Essence to craft Omega Healing Potions.
  • The Murasama, a powerful true Melee weapon located in the Underworld Bio-center Lab, can now be swung.

    • Upon defeating the Boss Rush, the player can obtain a special reward, with most playthroughs ending at this point.
  • While optional, the player can head to the Abyss and attempt to fight the Primordial Wyrm.

The Endgame

After the player defeats the Boss Rush (and optionally the Primordial Wyrm), they are in the endgame now. At this point, the player has several options of where to keep going, including playing other mods or starting over their adventure with the Calamity Mod as a different class.
