The Sponge is a craftable post-Moon Lord accessory which is the direct upgrade of the Rover Drive. After nine seconds of equipping the item without taking damage, a barrier covers its user, which grants 30 defense and 10% damage reduction. As the barrier is formed, it builds up to 180 shield durability at a rate of 30 durability per second. Durability depletes instead of health as the player takes damage equal to the amount of damage taken. Once all 180 shield durability is depleted, the barrier breaks and all effects are taken away.
Durability regenerates the same way as it is formed, requiring the player to not take damage for nine seconds, causing it to regenerate at a rate of 30 durability per second. It can regenerate if the shield is partially or fully damaged, but will immediately be interrupted as the player takes damage.

Notes
- If the shield absorbs an attack without breaking, then the blocked attack will not trigger any on-hit events, such as resetting the not-hit time counter of health regeneration, defense damage, inflicting the attack's debuffs (if it has any) or granting any on-hit effects granted by accessories or armor.
- Equipping The Sponge in a social accessory slot will create a visual shield that has no protection.
Tips
- The Sponge's energy shield blocks damage after all reductions, meaning that it gets more powerful with tanky builds.
- This accessory has synergy with The Evolution, as it reduces the damage of incoming projectiles to 1, dealing minimal damage to the shield.
Trivia
- During April 1st (April Fool's Day), the Sponge's sprite changes to a cube resembling a real life cleaning sponge.
- The Sponge gets its name from the term "damage sponge" due to its ability to increase the defense and survivability of the player.
