The Herring Staff is a Pre-Hardmode summon weapon that is obtained from Ancient Treasure Chests in the Abyss. It summons three Herrings that follow the player. They attack nearby enemies by swiftly darting at them to deal damage. The Herrings can fly through tiles but cannot attack through them and they emit visual water particles when charging at enemies.

Its best modifier is Ruthless. The Mythical modifier provides the widest array of stat bonuses, but these primarily affect the initial summon rather than the resulting minion. Additionally, minions cannot deal critical hits. The only lasting advantage a Mythical Herring Staff has over a Ruthless one is knockback.

Notes

Trivia

  • Despite being named "Herring Staff", the actual minion spawned by the staff doesn't quite look like a herring, since herrings have a distinctive reflecting silver-like color, while the minion's color is dark blue.

History

These history sections are still a work-in-progress, and may not yet contain changes relevant to the current version of the Calamity Mod.
  • 2.0.3.003:
    • Nerfed damage from 17 to 15.
    • Can now only attack through tiles while a boss is alive.
  • 2.0.3.002: Updated tooltip to reflect its rework.
  • 2.0.3.001:
    • Reworked:
      • Now summons a shoal of 3 herrings which consumes a single minion slot instead of summoning individual herrings which take up half a minion slot each.
      • The 3 herrings are purely visual, and collision is dealt by an invisible projectile in the center of them.
      • The minion now grants 35 local immunity frames.
  • 2.0.2.001:
    • Nerfed damage from 20 to 17.
    • Herrings now charge much faster at enemies, and grant 8 ID-static immunity frames instead of setting global immunity frames to 8.
  • 1.5.1.001: No longer considered a nature weapon.
  • 1.4.3.001: Fixed minion's attacks not benefitting from increased all-class damage.
