“Must everyone open and shut doors so incredibly noisily around here?!
The Door is a type of furniture item that prevents enemies from entering an area when closed. Players can open them by pressing the ⚷ Open / Activate on them. Doors can be placed in any space so long as it is exactly three blocks high, with ceiling and floor blocks. Friendly NPCs will also open and close doors during the day as they wander about.
Some enemies that follow the Fighter AI can open doors, and many enemies such as Goblin Peons can remove them entirely. See Fighter AI § Opening doors and Tall Gates for details.
Doors can also be opened and closed via Wires. If wires are placed on the door's hinge, then the wiring will toggle the door's closed/open state upon activation, but if wires are placed on the side tiles, where the door opens, then the wiring will only close the door.
The Lihzahrd Door occurs naturally at the entrance to the Jungle Temple and initially requires a Temple Key to open. Once unlocked, it can be freed with a pickaxe or drill, and placed again by the player like any other door. Lihzahrd Doors can also be crafted, but their crafting station can only be obtained after opening the initial door, and the ingredients require the Picksaw (or better) to mine, which is dropped by Golem. A locked Lihzahrd Door automatically completely prevents itself and the 2 blocks above and below it from breaking by any method.
Apart from the standard doors listed here, there also exist Trap Doors and Tall Gates, which behave similarly. Every block in the game can also be used like a (Switch-toggled) door via Actuators.
There are currently (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 42 / (Old-gen console version) 22 / 19 craftable and 6 noncraftable types of doors which must be looted from various locations in the world.

Notes
- (Desktop, Console, Mobile and 3DS versions) Doors open automatically when approached by players.
- (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) This option can be toggled in the Settings.
- Doors open to the left or right based on which direction the player faces, rather than the direction they are coming from. For example, if a player stands to the left of a door and faces left, the door will open toward the player – to the left. If the player does not move and then turns to the right and opens the door, it will now open to the right.
- If one side of the door has an obstacle that stops the door from opening that way, such as a piece of furniture or background object, the door will automatically open the other, clear way.
- This is useful to keep houses safe from enemies during some events like the Blood Moon, as they will always attempt to open the doors inward. On the Desktop version, Console version, Mobile version, and Nintendo version, doors opened by players will attempt to open to the other side when blocked.
- Doors hold back liquids when closed.
- If exposed to lava while open, doors (except for Obsidian Doors) will break automatically, but while closed, will hold back lava like they would hold other liquids.
- While opened, all doors take up 2×3 tiles. While closed, the dimensions are 1×3 tiles.
- Thus, it is more economical to paint doors when they are closed, as it would only require 3 Paint.
- Additionally, if one randomly paints one of the two spots in each row of an open door and close it, opening it again will apply paint to the entire door.
- If a door that a player is grappled to is opened, the hook will be released and the player will be flung several tiles in the direction the door was opened in.
Trivia
- Pine Doors don a wreath very similar to the Holly item, most likely due to being crafted from Pine Tree Blocks, which are only obtainable from Presents dropped during the Christmas season.
- Even though they are made out of tougher materials, the Lead, Stone and Iron Doors are functionally identical to the other doors.
